The Nightmare staff is a magic staff that needs 72 Magic and 50 Hitpoints to wield. It can autocast both standard and Ancient Magicks spells and gives +15% magic damage, the highest magic damage bonus any weapon has on Roat (the Kodai wand and a few other staves share it). At 2,500 PK points it is the cheapest weapon with that bonus.

Attaching an orb turns it into the Harmonised, Volatile or Eldritch nightmare staff. The orb staves keep the same bonuses but need 82 Magic, and each adds its own effect: faster standard spells, a big damage special attack, or a special attack that restores Prayer. You can compare all of them in the ::bis interface.

The Harmonised, Volatile and Eldritch nightmare staves, and the Volatile nightmare staff (deadman), have exactly the same bonuses. They need 82 Magic and 50 Hitpoints.

Effects

The plain Nightmare staff has no special attack or passive effect.

Harmonised nightmare staff

  • Standard spellbook spells cast with it attack every 4 ticks (2.4 seconds) instead of the usual 5 ticks (3 seconds). This works for autocast and manually cast spells.
  • It can only autocast standard spellbook spells, not Ancient Magicks.
  • It has no special attack.

Volatile nightmare staff

The special attack costs 55% special attack energy and fires one magic hit that needs no runes and is 50% more accurate than a normal cast.

  • The max hit scales with your base Magic level (potions and other boosts do not count). With the staff as your only magic damage item it is 50 at 75 Magic or lower, 54 at 82, 60 at 90 and 66 at 99 Magic.
  • Every other magic damage bonus you have, from gear, Augury or an imbued Slayer helmet on task, raises the max hit further.
  • Against players, if you are not autocasting, you stop attacking after the special attack.

Eldritch nightmare staff

The special attack costs 55% special attack energy and fires one magic hit that needs no runes and uses normal accuracy.

  • Its max hit also scales with your base Magic level: with the staff as your only magic damage item it is 39 at 75 Magic or lower, 42 at 82, 45 at 90 and 50 at 99 Magic. Other magic damage bonuses raise it further.
  • The hit restores your Prayer by half the damage dealt. This can take your Prayer above its normal maximum, up to 120 points.
  • Against players, if you are not autocasting, you stop attacking after the special attack.
