Runecraft training

Runecrafting is the skill of binding essence into runes at a runic altar. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience every rune gives and how Runecrafting earns skilling points. You buy the essence from the Runecrafting Tutor, and every essence you craft gives you its price back plus extra skilling points. Every rune you can craft except the wrath rune is free on Roat Pkz, so the runes you keep are wrath runes: they need level 95 and give the most experience and skilling points of all (see Runes).
Quick guide
| Altar | Essence | XP per essence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–65 | ::runecrafting): it makes the best rune your level allows |
18–50 | |
| 65–77 | 100 | ||
| 77–90 | 130 | ||
| 90–95 | 170 | ||
| 95–99 | 250 |
The ZMI altar is the easiest place to train: the bank chest and the Runecrafting Tutor stand a few steps away and there is no danger, but it only takes pure essence, which gives half the experience. Daeyalt essence gives twice as much experience per essence at every other altar. See Training by level for the details.
How Runecrafting works
- Essence: buy pure essence and Daeyalt essence from the Runecrafting Tutor (see Essence). Daeyalt essence gives the full experience in the table below and pure essence half of it. Every altar takes both, except the ZMI altar, which only takes pure essence.
- Crafting: click Craft-rune on an altar and every essence in your inventory is turned into runes at once. Essence in your pouches is not used: empty the pouches and click the altar again, or use a Rune Expert scroll.
- Levels: you need the Runecrafting level of a rune to use its altar and its rift in the Abyss. The ZMI altar has no level requirement: it always makes the highest-level rune your Runecrafting level allows, from air runes at level 1 up to soul runes at 90. The Wrath altar in the Divine Skilling Zone works the same way, up to wrath runes.
- What you get: experience, skilling points for every essence (see Skilling points and runes) and the wrath runes you craft. Every other rune is free in the Magic Shop, so those runes do not go into your inventory, except at the altar in the Divine Skilling Zone, which gives you every rune it makes.
- No Wilderness bonus: Runecrafting gives the same experience for a rune at every altar, in the Wilderness or not.
- Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to craft at the Wrath altar in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Unlike most skills, Hardcore PvP accounts can train Runecrafting outside the Wilderness too.
Rates per hour
The rate tables show what every way of training gives per hour, so you can compare them:
- The hourly amounts are what an efficient player gets in real play, about the fastest tenth of real trips. Crafting is instant, so the rate is how fast you bring new essence to the altar. The rates use Daeyalt essence everywhere except the ZMI altar, a full Colossal pouch from level 75 and the smaller pouches below that. You get less if you bank slower or take breaks.
- Boosts: the bar above each table has your Runecrafting level and the boosts you have: a Double XP or Double Harvest scroll (or the Well of Goodwill perk), a Rune Expert scroll, the Raiments of the eye, the Runecrafting XP clan perk and your vote streak. Every table on the page then shows your rates, and your browser remembers what you picked. With nothing picked the tables show level 99 and no boosts. Rows for other levels are greyed out.
- Trips/h is how many trips to the altar you make an hour, and Essence/h how much essence you craft.
- XP/h is the experience you get an hour. Runecrafting has no double-experience area, so there is one XP/h column.
- SKP/h is the extra skilling points the runes earn you an hour. Every essence also pays its price back, so the essence costs you nothing. The wrath runes you keep come on top.
- PKP/h is that in PK points: right-click your skilling points and choose Claim-PKP to get 1 PK point for every 2 skilling points.
Runes
The experience is before the bonuses in Experience bonuses. On top of the skilling points in the table, every essence gives you its price back: 500 skilling points for pure essence and 1,000 for Daeyalt essence. The ZMI altar pays half the skilling points and never makes wrath runes. The Abyss has a rift for every rune here except astral and wrath runes; the ZMI altar makes astral runes at levels 40 to 43. Value is what one rune is worth; the free runes come from the Magic Shop at ::shops (see Getting runes).
Rates by method
ZMI altar trips
Buy pure essence from the Runecrafting Tutor before every trip and walk to the altar. Below level 40 the pouches do not save time here, because every pouch load needs another purchase; from level 40 they give about a quarter more essence an hour.
Abyss and Wrath altar trips
Take Daeyalt essence from the bank at Edgeville. For the Abyss, walk north to the Mage of Zamorak (you need combat level 126) and take the rift of your rune. For the Wrath altar (level 95, combat level 100), teleport to Edge Hills with ::hills, run north-west to the altar and use the home teleport to bank again. A trip holds 67 essence with the Colossal pouch, and the Wrath altar also gives you a wrath rune for every essence.
Royal and Divine dungeon trips
Royal Donators can craft wrath runes in the Royal skilling dungeon from level 80, and Divine Donators can craft at any level in the Divine Skilling Zone, whose altar makes the best rune your boosted level allows. Buy noted Daeyalt essence from the tutor and let Piles unnote it next to the altar, so you never have to leave. A trip holds 64 essence, because the banknotes, your skilling points and the runes each take a slot. The Divine levels are your level before the zone adds 25.
Equipment
Essence
The Runecrafting Tutor (::runecrafting) sells pure essence for 500 skilling points and Daeyalt essence for 1,000. Crafting an essence gives you that price back, so the essence costs you nothing in the end, and you can also sell essence you do not use back to the tutor for the same price. Essence you buy with the Buy-X option comes as banknotes; put them in your bank and take the essence out from there, or use them on a Piles NPC in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.
Essence pouches
A pouch carries essence in a single inventory slot, so each trip to the altar holds more essence. The Runecrafting Tutor sells them:
| Pouch | Holds | Price (SKP) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 essence | 10,000 | |
| 20 | 6 essence | 20,000 | |
| 40 | 9 essence | 40,000 | |
| 60 | 12 essence | 75,000 | |
| 75 | 40 essence | 500,000 |
- Fill puts essence from your inventory into the pouch, Empty takes it out again and Check shows how much is inside. You need the level in the table to fill a pouch.
- You can own one of each pouch. The Colossal pouch holds more than the other four together (30 essence) in one slot, but you can only buy it once you have sold your other pouches, and you cannot buy them while you own it. The tutor buys pouches back for what you paid.
- With a full inventory and the Colossal pouch you carry up to 67 essence.
Raiments of the eye
Main article: Raiments of the eye
Each piece of the Raiments of the eye gives 2% more Runecrafting experience, and all four give 10%. The Runecrafting Tutor sells the hat for 20,000 skilling points, the robe top for 40,000, the robe bottoms for 30,000 and the boots for 10,000. There is no level requirement. The red, green and blue versions, made with the Abyssal dyes from the same shop (5,000 skilling points each), give the same bonus.
Experience bonuses
Every essence gives the experience in the table above, raised by these bonuses. Pick them in the bar above any rate table to see your rates with them.
| Bonus | Effect |
|---|---|
| +2% per piece, +10% for the full outfit | |
+1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
| |
| The total is multiplied by 1.1 | |
| The total is doubled |
The outfit and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, a Daeyalt essence crafted into a wrath rune gives 250 experience. With the full Raiments of the eye it gives 275 (250 × 1.1), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 400 (× 1.6). The clan perk raises that to 440 and double experience to 880. Runecrafting has no Wilderness bonus.
Level boosts
Your boosted Runecrafting level counts for the altars, the rifts, the pouches and the rune the ZMI altar makes:
- An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Runecrafting level to 99 for an hour, so you can craft wrath runes and fill the Colossal pouch at any level. A Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour. Both are on the Scrolls page.
- The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.
Other scrolls
With a Rune Expert scroll active, clicking an altar also crafts the essence in your pouches, so you craft all 67 essence of a full trip in one click. That saves about 2 seconds a trip; pick it in the bar above the rate tables.- The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk double the skilling points each essence earns. The price of the essence you get back is not doubled.

The Royal skilling dungeon is for Royal Donators and the Divine Skilling Zone for Divine Donators. The Wrath altar in the Wilderness and the Royal and Divine dungeons are dangerous: other players can attack you, and you lose your items when you die (see Items Kept on Death). The Abyss and the altars you reach through it are not PvP areas, but the Mage of Zamorak stands in the Wilderness.
ZMI altar

::runecrafting takes you to the north-east of the Skilling Zone, next to the Runecrafting Tutor and a bank chest. The ZMI altar is a short walk east. Buy pure essence from the tutor, fill your pouches, craft, and go back to the bank chest or the tutor for more. The altar picks the rune for you, so you never have to change altars as you level: it makes chaos runes from level 35, death runes from 65, blood runes from 77 and soul runes from 90.

The Abyss

The Abyss holds a rift to 13 different altars. To use it:
- Take your Daeyalt essence from the bank at Edgeville and walk north across the Wilderness ditch to the Mage of Zamorak in level 5 Wilderness.
- Right-click him and choose Teleport-abyss. You need a combat level of 126. He takes you to the middle of the Abyss, and after your first trip back to the spot you last left it from.
- Click Exit-through on the rift of the rune you want to make. You need that rune's Runecrafting level.
- Craft the runes at the altar. The portal next to the altar takes you back to Edgeville, right beside a bank chest, or you can teleport out.
Other players can attack you in the Wilderness on your way to the Mage, so bring only your essence and pouches.

Wrath altar

The Wrath altar stands in level 9 Wilderness, a short walk north-west of Edgeville. It needs level 95 Runecrafting and gives 250 experience and 100 skilling points for every Daeyalt essence, plus the wrath runes. Royal Donators have a second Wrath altar in the Royal skilling dungeon, where the dungeon's +15 boost lets you use it from level 80. The altar in the Divine Skilling Zone works like the ZMI altar: it makes the highest-level rune your boosted level allows, wrath runes included, and you keep every rune. Inside that zone your Runecrafting is boosted by 25 levels, so it makes wrath runes from level 70. In both dungeons a Piles NPC stands near the Wrath altar: use banknotes of essence on him to turn them back into essence, so you can keep crafting without leaving.

Skilling points and runes
Every essence you craft gives you its price back (500 skilling points for pure essence, 1,000 for Daeyalt essence) plus the skilling points of the rune in the Runes table. The ZMI altar pays half of the rune's skilling points, and only for pure essence. Wrath runes also go into your inventory.
For example, a trip of 67 Daeyalt essence to a Wrath altar gives you 67 × 1,100 = 73,700 skilling points: the 67,000 you paid for the essence and 6,700 on top, plus 67 wrath runes. Wrath runes earn five times as many skilling points per essence as any other rune. The Double Harvest scroll doubles the extra points, and the outfit and other experience bonuses do not change them. You can turn skilling points into PK points at 2 skilling points for 1 PK point, and wrath runes can be traded or used for Surge spells (see Runes). The SKP/h columns in the rate tables count these extra points for an hour of crafting.
Training by level
The numbers of essence below use the experience in the Runes table, without the Raiments of the eye or other bonuses.
Levels 1–65: ZMI altar

Buy pure essence from the Runecrafting Tutor and craft it at the ZMI altar. The altar makes the best rune for your level, so each essence gives more experience as you level: 18 at level 1, 28 at 20 (body runes), 35 at 35 (chaos runes), 40 at 44 (nature runes) and 50 at 65 (death runes). From 1 to 65 you need about 11,190 pure essence, about 3½ hours. Buy the pouches as you reach their levels, so you carry more essence on every trip.
Levels 65–90: the Abyss
Once your combat level is 126, Daeyalt essence in the Abyss gives twice the experience of the ZMI altar. The Death altar (level 65) gives 100 experience per essence and the Blood altar (level 77) 130. From 65 to 77 you need about 10,260 Daeyalt essence and from 77 to 90 about 29,780. If you stay at the ZMI altar, the same levels take about 20,520 and 59,550 pure essence. In the Abyss that is about 2½ hours from 65 to 77 and 5½ hours from 77 to 90; at the ZMI altar about 6 and 13½ hours. Daeyalt essence works at every Abyss altar, so you can also start there at a lower level.
Levels 90–95: soul runes
The Soul altar in the Abyss gives 170 experience per Daeyalt essence. From 90 to 95 you need about 20,150, about 4 hours in the Abyss. The ZMI altar makes soul runes too, for 85 experience per pure essence.
Levels 95–99: wrath runes
Wrath runes give 250 experience and 100 skilling points per Daeyalt essence, the most of any rune, and you keep the runes. From 95 to 99 you need about 17,050 Daeyalt essence: about 3 hours at the Wrath altar in the Wilderness, or about an hour in the Royal skilling dungeon. Craft them at the Wrath altar in level 9 Wilderness, or in the Royal skilling dungeon or the Divine Skilling Zone if you have those donator ranks. With an Indomitable Skiller scroll you can craft wrath runes for 250 experience at any level.
Best rates
Most experience
The Royal skilling dungeon gives the most experience, then the Divine Skilling Zone and the Wrath altar in the Wilderness, which needs no donator rank. From level 90 to 95, the soul altar in the Abyss gives about 911,000 experience an hour, more than twice the 376,000 of the ZMI altar.
Most skilling points
Wrath runes pay 100 skilling points per essence, five times any other rune, so the Wrath altars are also the best money, and you keep a wrath rune for every essence on top.
AFK Runecrafting
Main article: AFK Skilling
In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Runecrafting at the Soul altar without any essence once you have level 50 Runecrafting. You do not make any runes or skilling points, and the experience is lower than normal Runecrafting, but your character keeps crafting while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Raiments of the eye, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have an AFK Soul altar in their own zone.
