Vengeance is a Lunar spellbook spell that needs 94 Magic and 40 Defence. After you cast it, the next hit that damages you, from a player or a monster, deals 75% of that damage back to whoever hit you, and your character shouts "Taste vengeance!". It costs 10 earth runes, 4 astral runes and 2 death runes, and you can cast it once every 30 seconds (50 game ticks). It is the standard spell of melee PKers in the Wilderness and in melee tournaments, and it works against monsters too.
Casting
- You need to be on the Lunar spellbook with 94 Magic and 40 Defence. The game checks your current levels, so boosts count: an Imbued heart lets you cast it from 85 Magic. If your Defence is drained below 40 you can't cast it until it is restored: You need a defence level of 40 to cast vengeance.
- Vengeance has no target. Click it in the spellbook and it is active straight away.
- After each cast you must wait 50 ticks (30 seconds) before you can cast it again, whether or not it has been used up in the meantime: You can only cast vengeance spells every 30 seconds.
- It stays active until a hit uses it up, with no time limit. Casting it again while it is still active does not stack; it only uses runes.
- An active Vengeance is switched off when you die, when you load a kit, when a duel starts, and when you enter a minigame or raid such as Last Man Standing, Castle Wars, the Clan Cup, a tournament, the Chambers of Xeric or the Theatre of Blood.
When you can't cast it
- While you wield Dinh's bulwark: Your bulwark gets in the way.
- In the F2P Zone, which also puts you on the standard spellbook: You can't cast this spell here.
- In a Duel Arena duel with Magic turned off.
- In a Clan Cup fight when Vengeance is turned off for that cup. The Clan Cup interface shows whether it is enabled: Vengeance has been disabled during the clan cup.
- In Last Man Standing the Lunar spellbook can be picked on the Max and Zerker builds, but not on the Pure build.
What it does
When a hit that deals damage lands on you while Vengeance is active:
- The player or monster that hit you takes 75% of the damage you took, rounded down, as a separate hit from you.
- Only damage you can actually take counts. If the hit is bigger than the Hitpoints you have left, Vengeance deals 75% of your remaining Hitpoints.
- Vengeance is then used up. A miss or a 0 does not use it up.
- Anything that lowers the hit on you, such as your protection prayer or an Elysian spirit shield, applies first, so Vengeance deals back 75% of the lowered hit.
- The hit it deals back is not lowered by the attacker's protection prayers or Elysian spirit shield. It is a normal hit from you, so it can kill.
- In multi-combat areas it hits back whoever's hit set it off.
| Hit you take | Your Hitpoints before the hit | Damage dealt back |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | 99 | 30 |
| 25 | 99 | 18 |
| 60 | 40 | 30 |
| 1 | 99 | 0 |
| 0 or a miss | 99 | none; Vengeance stays active |

Against players and monsters
The spell is the same in PvP and PvM: 75% of the damage, capped by your remaining Hitpoints. A few things differ:
Against players
- Each hit is lowered by your protection prayer (to 60%) and your Elysian spirit shield when your opponent attacks, before Vengeance reads it.
- If your Vengeance hits a player for 30 or more and beats your record, you get a message such as Congratulations, your new Max Vengeance hit is 34.
::maxhitshows your highest Vengeance hit next to your highest melee, ranged and magic hits. - When you kill a player and are within 15 tiles of them, your Vengeance cooldown is reset (and your special attack is refilled), so you can cast it again straight away. This does not happen in the Clan Cup.
Against monsters
- Your protection prayer lowers or blocks the monster's hit first. If the prayer blocks the whole hit, Vengeance stays active.
- Dragonfire and Zulrah's tail whip never set it off (see above).
- Boss guides such as Corporeal Beast, Venenatis and killing Nex suggest bringing it.
Runes
| Rune | Per cast | Where to get it | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earth rune | 10 |
| |
| Astral rune | 4 | ||
| Death rune | 2 | ||
- A staff that gives earth runes, or a charged Tome of earth, covers the 10 earth runes.
Blighted vengeance sack: with one in your inventory you can cast Vengeance without runes; each cast uses one sack. If you also carry the runes, the runes are used first. The magic shop at ::shopssells them for 1 Bounty Hunter point each, and they are tradeable and stackable.- See Commands for the other rune spawning commands.
Switching to the Lunar spellbook
- Use the altar of the occult at
::home. Spellbooks can only be changed outside PvP areas. ::vengand the Vengeance pre-set of the Rune pouch offer to switch you when you are on another spellbook.- Royal Donators and higher can also change spellbook by right-clicking the Magic tab, anywhere they can use a bank.
Combining it with recoil effects
Vengeance, a
ring of recoil and the Amulet of the damned effect can all go off on the same hit:
| Effect | Damage dealt back | Works against |
|---|---|---|
| 75% of the hit (capped by your remaining Hitpoints), once per cast | Players and monsters | |
| 10% of every hit, at least 1 | Players and monsters | |
| 15% of the hit, rounded down, on a 25% chance | Players only |
When all three go off on the same hit they add up to 75% + 10% + 15% = 100% of the hit, a little less after rounding down. None of this returned damage can set off the attacker's own Vengeance.
Trailblazer animation

Reading a Trailblazer reloaded vengeance scroll unlocks a fiery Trailblazer animation for Vengeance. Once unlocked, you can switch it on or off by talking to Skully at home. It is only a cosmetic change; the spell works the same way.
