Javelins

This page is about ballista ammunition. For the thrown weapon, see Morrigan's javelin.

Javelins are the ammunition of the Heavy ballista and the Light ballista. You wear a stack of them in the ammunition slot, and the ballista fires one with every attack. Their only bonus is Ranged strength, which is added to the ballista's: dragon javelins give +150, the most of any ammunition in the ::bis interface. Rune and amethyst javelins are free in the Ranged Accessories shop, and dragon javelins drop from Demonic gorillas. Every javelin on this page can be traded.

Comparison

Javelin level Ranged strength Fletching level Get it from Value (each)
Bronze javelin – +25 3 Spawn, Fletching Free
Iron javelin – +42 17 Spawn, Fletching Free
Steel javelin 5 +64 32 Spawn, Fletching Free
Mithril javelin 20 +85 47 Spawn, Fletching Free
Adamant javelin 30 +102 62 Spawn, Fletching Free
Rune javelin 40 +124 77 Ranged Accessories (free), spawn, Fletching Free
Amethyst javelin – +135 84 Ranged Accessories (free), spawn, Fletching Free
Dragon javelin 60 +150 – Demonic gorillas, Divine Demonic Gorillas, achievements 10 PKP

PKP = PK points. Spawn means you can spawn the javelin outside PvP areas, for example with ::item (see Commands). Javelins have no attack or defence bonuses, only the Ranged strength above.

Firing javelins

  • Both ballistas fire every javelin on this page, poisoned ones included. A ballista can fire any javelin that does not need a higher Ranged level than the ballista itself (65 for the light ballista, 75 for the heavy ballista), and no javelin needs more than 60.
  • The heavy ballista adds +15 Ranged strength of its own to the javelin's; the light ballista adds none.
  • Every javelin a ballista fires is used up. Javelins never land on the floor, and Ava's devices do not save them.

Poisoned javelins

Bronze to rune javelins and amethyst javelins also come in three poisoned versions, (p), (p+) and (p++), for example Rune javelin(p++). A poisoned javelin has exactly the same bonuses and requirements as the normal one. Poisoned javelins are not sold in any shop, but they can be spawned like the normal javelins.

Version First poison hit Total poison damage
(p) 2 12
(p+) 3 24
(p++) 4 40
  • Every poisoned javelin that deals damage has a 20% chance to poison the target.
  • The poison hits about every 20 seconds (34 game ticks) and gets 1 weaker after every 4 hits, until it runs out. The totals above are for one full poison.
  • A target that is already poisoned only takes a new poison if it is stronger. Poison cannot affect a venomed target, a monster that is immune to poison, or a player who has antipoison protection or wears a charged serpentine, magma or tanzanite helm.

How to get them

Shops and spawning

  • Ranged Accessories (::shops): rune and amethyst javelins for free.
  • Every javelin except the dragon javelin, poisoned versions included, can be spawned outside PvP areas.

Fletching

Use javelin heads on javelin shafts to make 15 javelins at a time, at the Fletching levels in the table above. Bronze to rune javelin heads are smithed from bars, 5 heads per bar (see Smithing training). Amethyst javelin heads are cut from amethyst with a chisel at level 87 Fletching, 5 heads per amethyst; amethyst costs 1,500 skilling points in the Mining and Crafting shops. Javelin shafts are cut from logs with a knife (15 from normal logs, more from better logs), or cost 1 skilling point each in the Fletching shop (see Fletching training).

Dragon javelin drops

Monster Quantity Rate
Demonic gorillas
Divine Demonic Gorillas
100–500 1/250
25–100 1/25
1–20 ~9/10

Both gorillas have the same javelin drops. The 1–20 javelins are their only common drop, so they come on every kill that rolls no rarer drop, about 9 kills in 10.

Other dragon javelin sources

  • Slayer Crate: the crate (500 Slayer points in the Slayer Shop) can contain 5,000 dragon javelins.
  • Item sets: 100 dragon javelins can be packed into a 100x Dragon Javelin at the item sets interface, and opened again later.
  • Trading post: dragon javelins are tradeable, so you can also buy them from other players.
