Smithing training

Smithing is the skill of smelting ores into metal bars at a furnace and hammering the bars into weapons, armour and ammunition at an anvil. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience every bar and item gives and how Smithing earns skilling points. Smelting and smithing give double experience in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and runite bars can only be smelted and smithed there.

Smelt the best bar you can and smith every bar into the item that uses the most bars you can make: a platebody (5 bars) gives the most experience per action. See Training by level for the details.
How Smithing works
- Smelting: use the Smelt option on a furnace, choose how many bars to make and click the bar. Your character smelts one bar every 5 ticks (3 seconds) until you run out of ores. Every bar is smelted successfully, iron bars included.
- Smithing: click an anvil to open the smithing menu for the best bar in your inventory that you have the level for, then choose an item and how many to make. You need a hammer in your inventory. Every item takes 5 ticks (3 seconds), however many bars it uses, so items that use more bars give more experience for your time. You keep the item you make, and you also get skilling points for the bars you used.
- Where you can smelt and smith: only in the Skilling Zone, the donator zones and the Wilderness. The furnaces and anvils are listed in Where to smith.
- Runite bars can only be smelted and smithed in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.
- Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to smelt or smith in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Smithing in the Wilderness.

"Double experience" is the experience in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. Runite bars can only be made there, so their experience already includes the bonus. All experience is before the bonuses in Experience bonuses. "Ores cost" is what the ores cost in the Smithing shop, and it is also what one bar of that metal is worth when you smith it.
Smithing items
Every item takes the same time to smith, so the experience for an item is the bar's smithing experience multiplied by the number of bars it uses. A rune platebody gives 5 × 700 = 3,500 experience in the Wilderness, while a rune dagger gives 700.

The metal columns give the Smithing level you need for each item. "Made" is how many items one action makes.
Equipment
Hammer and ores
You need a
hammer in your inventory to smith; the Smithing Tutor's shop has them for free. You can mine your own ores (see Mining training) or buy them from the Smithing Tutor and the Mining Tutor for the same prices they pay for them: 20 skilling points for copper or tin ore, 25 for iron ore, 40 for coal, 70 for mithril ore, 120 for adamantite ore and 700 for runite ore. Ores you buy with the Buy-X option come as banknotes; a Piles NPC turns them back into ores in the Resource Area, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.
Goldsmith gauntlets
Main article: Goldsmith gauntlets
The Goldsmith gauntlets give 10% more Smithing experience while you wear them, both when you smelt bars and when you smith items. The Smithing Tutor sells them for 100,000 skilling points. They have no level requirement and cannot be traded. See also other experience items.
Infernal pickaxe
While you mine with an infernal pickaxe, 1 ore in 6 from copper, tin, iron, mithril, adamantite and runite rocks comes out as a bar, and you get the Smithing experience for smelting it. You do not need a Smithing level or any coal for it.
Experience bonuses
Every bar and item gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses:
| Bonus | Effect |
|---|---|
| +10% | |
| +100%: double experience | |
+1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
| |
| Smithing XP (10%) clan perk | The total is multiplied by 1.1 |
| The total is doubled | |
| When smelting: about 1 bar in 10 gives you a second bar and double experience |
The gauntlets, Wilderness and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, smelting a runite bar gives 1,600 experience before the double-experience bonus. In the Wilderness it gives 3,200, with the Goldsmith gauntlets 3,360 (1,600 × 2.1), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 4,160 (× 2.6). The clan perk raises that to 4,576 and double experience to 9,152.
Level boosts
Your boosted Smithing level counts for the level requirements of bars and items:
- An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Smithing level to 99 for an hour, so you can smelt and smith runite bars at any level. A Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour. Both are on the Scrolls page.
- The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.
Other scrolls
- With a
Smelter scroll active you smelt bars without any coal. - The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk give you two bars every time you smelt, for the same ores and experience, and double the extra skilling points you get for smithing.

Not in the Wilderness, but a donator PvP dungeon: other players can attack you
Level 51 – Deep center Wilderness (Resource Area, east side) · 3194-3196, 3930-3934
The Donator Dungeon is open to every donator rank, but its Extreme and Legendary sections need the Extreme and Legendary Donator ranks. The Royal skilling dungeon is for Royal Donators and the Divine Skilling Zone for Divine Donators. Every Wilderness spot, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine dungeons are dangerous: other players can attack you, and you lose your items when you die (see Items Kept on Death).
Skilling points
Smelting gives no skilling points, and bars cannot be sold to a shop. When you smith an item, you get skilling points for every bar it uses: the bar's value (the price of its ores) plus extra points, and the extra points are doubled in the Wilderness and the Donator Dungeon. You also keep the item you made.
| Bar | Bar value (SKP) |
Extra per bar | Extra per bar (Wilderness) |
SKP per bar smithed | SKP per bar smithed (Wilderness) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 32 | 64 | 72 | 104 | |
| 25 | 50 | 100 | 75 | 125 | |
| 105 | 66 | 132 | 171 | 237 | |
| 230 | 82 | 164 | 312 | 394 | |
| 360 | 166 | 332 | 526 | 692 | |
| 1,020 | 250 | 500 | 1,270 | 1,520 |
For example, a rune platebody smithed in the Resource Area uses 5 runite bars and gives 5 × 1,520 = 7,600 skilling points. The ores for those 5 bars cost 5,100 skilling points in the Smithing shop, so Smithing pays back the ores you buy and earns the extra points on top. In the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons the experience is doubled but the extra points are not: a runite bar gives 1,270 there. The Goldsmith gauntlets and other experience bonuses do not change the skilling points. You can turn skilling points into PK points at 2 skilling points for 1 PK point.
Training by level
The numbers of bars below use the smelting and smithing experience of each bar, without the Goldsmith gauntlets or other bonuses. Smelting gives most of the experience, so smelt every bar yourself, then smith it into the item with the most bars you can make: the platebody once you have the level, and before that a 3-bar item such as the warhammer, battleaxe, chainbody or kiteshield.
Levels 1–15: bronze
Smelt
bronze bars (250 experience each) from copper and tin ore, and smith them into daggers, then bigger items as you level. You need about 8 bronze bars to reach level 15.
Levels 15–30: iron
Iron bars give 300 experience and never fail, and they only need one iron ore (25 skilling points). From level 24 you can smith them into 3-bar items, starting with the warhammer. From 15 to 30 you need about 30 iron bars.
Levels 30–50: steel
Steel bars (350 experience) need an iron ore and 2 coal. Steel platebodies need level 48. From 30 to 50 you need about 200 steel bars.
Levels 50–70: mithril
Mithril bars give 400 experience and 100 per bar when you smith them. From 50 to 70 you need about 1,270 mithril bars.
Levels 70–85: adamantite
Adamantite bars give twice as much experience as mithril: 800 for smelting and 200 per bar for smithing. From 70 to 85 you need about 2,520 adamantite bars, or about 1,260 if you smelt and smith them in the Wilderness, for example in the Resource Area or the Donator Dungeon.
Levels 85–99: runite
Runite bars give 3,200 experience for smelting and 700 per bar for smithing, because they can only be made where Smithing gives double experience. Smith them into the rune item with the most bars you can make: 2-bar items from level 90, the warhammer (3 bars) from 94 and the platebody (5 bars, 3,500 experience) at 99. From 85 to 99 you need about 2,510 runite bars. The Resource Area and the Donator Dungeon also double the extra skilling points, so every runite bar smithed there pays back its ores plus 500 skilling points.
Best experience
Smelting and smithing both take 5 ticks per action, so the best experience comes from the highest bar you can smelt and the item with the most bars you can smith. At level 99, where Smithing gives double experience:
| Action | XP per action | Time per action |
|---|---|---|
| 3,500 | 5 ticks (3 s) | |
| 3,200 | 5 ticks (3 s) | |
| 2,100 | 5 ticks (3 s) | |
| 2,000 | 5 ticks (3 s) | |
| 1,600 | 5 ticks (3 s) |
Every runite bar you smelt and smith into a platebody gives 3,900 experience in 6 ticks.
AFK Smithing
Main article: AFK Skilling
In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Smithing at the AFK anvil without any bars or a hammer once you have level 50 Smithing. You do not make any items or skilling points, and the experience is lower than active smithing, but your character keeps smithing while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Goldsmith gauntlets, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have an AFK anvil in their own zone.
