Mining training

Mining is the skill of mining ores from rocks with a pickaxe. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience every ore gives and what to do with your ores: sell them for skilling points or smelt and smith them with Smithing. Every ore gives double experience in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. Runite can only be mined there and in the Donator Dungeon, and amethyst only in the Divine Skilling Zone.

Quick guide

Mining Levels Ore Where
1–30 Copper and tin Home, Skilling Zone, Wilderness mine east of West Dragons
30–85 Coal Skilling Zone, or the Wilderness mine east of West Dragons for double experience
85–99 Runite Resource Area, Donator Dungeon, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, Lava Maze, Ice Plateau
92–99 Amethyst, which never runs out Divine Skilling Zone (Divine Donators only)

Coal gives the most experience for your time of all the ores below runite, so you can mine it all the way from level 30 to 85. See Training by level for the details.

How Mining works

  • Pickaxe: you need a pickaxe in your inventory or weapon slot. If you carry several, the best one you have the Mining level for is used. You do not need an Attack level to mine with it.
  • Speed: each ore takes a random time around an average: the rock's time in the table below multiplied by a number from 1 to 5 that depends on your Mining level and your pickaxe (see Pickaxes). Your Mining level has the bigger effect. Levels above 99 do not make you any faster. Times on this page are in game ticks of 0.6 seconds.
  • Rocks run out: every rock gives one ore and is then empty for a short time, shown in the table below. When a rock runs out, everyone mining it stops, so a mine with many rocks is best. Amethyst crystals never run out: you keep mining until your inventory is full.
  • Where you can mine: only at home, in the Skilling Zone, in the donator zones and in the Wilderness. Runite can only be mined in the Wilderness, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.
  • Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to mine in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Mining in the Wilderness.

Rates per hour

The rate tables show what every rock gives per hour, so you can compare them:

  • The hourly amounts are what an efficient player gets: every ore takes the time your Mining level and pickaxe allow, clicking the next rock takes about a tick, and emptying an inventory takes about 10 seconds. That assumes you have three or more free rocks; in a busy mine, where other players empty the rocks you are mining, expect up to a fifth less. Amethyst never runs out, so you keep mining without clicking.
  • Boosts: the bar above each table has your Mining level, your pickaxe and the boosts you have: a Double XP, Double Harvest or Noted Gatherer scroll (or the Well of Goodwill perk), the Prospector kit, the Mining XP clan perk, the max cape, the Celestial ring and your vote streak. Every table on the page then shows your rates, and your browser remembers what you picked. With nothing picked the tables show level 99 with a dragon pickaxe and no boosts. Rocks your level cannot mine yet are greyed out and show the rates at their level requirement.
  • Ores/h is how many ores you get an hour, with the extra ores from Double Harvest, the max cape and the Celestial ring.
  • XP/h is the experience you get an hour. XP/h Wilderness is the same in the Wilderness, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, where Mining gives double experience. Runite and amethyst can only be mined there, so they have no normal XP/h.
  • SKP/h is what the Mining Tutor pays for your ores in skilling points. It is the same everywhere.
  • PKP/h is that in PK points: right-click your skilling points and choose Claim-PKP to get 1 PK point for every 2 skilling points.

The times are for level 99 with a dragon pickaxe; the crystal pickaxe is only faster for runite and amethyst. Runite and amethyst can only be mined where Mining gives double experience, so their experience already includes that bonus. The experience is before the bonuses below. "Sells for" is what the Mining Tutor pays for one ore; see Selling and using your ores.

Runite and amethyst can only be mined where Mining gives double experience, so they have no normal XP/h. Rates assume you have three or more free rocks; in a busy mine expect up to a fifth less.

Equipment

Pickaxes

Main article: Pickaxes

The Mining Tutor (::mining) sells every standard pickaxe for skilling points, from a free bronze pickaxe to the crystal pickaxe (level 71, 300,000 skilling points), the fastest one. The Skilling Tutor at home also gives a free bronze pickaxe. The dragon (level 61), infernal (61) and crystal pickaxes have a special attack that raises your Mining level by 3.

An ore takes its time in the Ores table multiplied by the number for your level and pickaxe:

Pickaxe Level ×5 ×4 ×3 ×2 ×1
Bronze 1 1–26 27–59 60–92 93–99 –
Iron 1 1–19 20–52 53–85 86–99 –
Steel 6 6–13 14–46 47–79 80–99 –
Black 11 – 11–39 40–72 73–99 –
Mithril 21 – 21–33 34–66 67–99 –
Adamant 31 – – 31–59 60–92 93–99
Rune or gilded 41 – – – 41–72 73–99
Dragon, infernal or 3rd age 61 – – – 61–66 67–99
Crystal 71 – – – – 71–99
Aquatic adze 1 – – 1–33 34–66 67–99

From level 73 a rune pickaxe is as fast as a dragon pickaxe, and from 93 an adamant one is too. The crystal pickaxe and the Aquatic adze take another tenth off, rounded up: at level 99 that only makes runite (16 ticks) and amethyst (30 ticks) faster. The Aquatic adze is as strong as a crystal pickaxe but has no level requirement, and 9 ores in 10 come out as banknotes.

The infernal pickaxe mines as fast as a dragon pickaxe. 1 ore in 6 from copper, tin, iron, mithril, adamantite and runite rocks comes out as a bar instead (a bronze, iron, mithril, adamantite or runite bar), and you also get the Smithing experience for smelting it, for example 1,600 for a runite bar before bonuses. You do not need a Smithing level or any coal. The Mining and Smithing Tutors do not buy bars, so selling your ores earns about a sixth less on those rocks unless you smith the bars; see Smithing training.

Prospector kit

Main article: Prospector kit

Each piece of the Prospector kit gives 2% more Mining experience, and all four give 10%. The Golden prospector pieces give the same bonus, and you can mix both sets. There is no level requirement. The Mining Tutor sells both: the helmet for 20,000 skilling points, the jacket for 40,000, the legs for 30,000 and the boots for 10,000.

Celestial ring

The Celestial ring (200,000 skilling points from the Mining Tutor, untradeable) gives you about a 1 in 10 chance on every ore to get a second ore and the experience for it. In the Wilderness the extra ore goes into your inventory as a banknote. It works together with the max cape: with both, about 1 ore in 5 gives you an extra ore. See other experience items.

Experience bonuses

Every ore gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses. Pick them in the bar above any rate table to see your rates with them.

Bonus Effect
Prospector kit +2% per piece, +10% for the full kit
Wilderness, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons +100%: double experience
Vote streak +1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
Mining XP (10%) clan perk The total is multiplied by 1.1
Double XP scroll or the Well of Goodwill's Double XP perk The total is doubled
Max cape About 1 ore in 10 gives you a second ore and double experience
Celestial ring About 1 ore in 10 gives you a second ore and its experience

The kit, Wilderness and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, a runite ore gives 3,000 experience before the Wilderness bonus. Mined in the Wilderness it gives 6,000, with the full Prospector kit 6,300 (3,000 × 2.1), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 7,800 (× 2.6). The clan perk raises that to 8,580 and double experience to 17,160.

Level boosts

Your boosted Mining level counts for the level requirements, for your pickaxe and for the speed of every ore (up to level 99):

  • An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Mining level to 99 for an hour, and a Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour; see Scrolls.
  • The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.
  • The special attack of the dragon, infernal and crystal pickaxes boosts your Mining level by 3.

Other scrolls

  • The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk give you two ores every time, which doubles the skilling points. The experience stays the same, and your inventory fills twice as fast.
  • With the Noted Gatherer scroll, half of your ores go into your inventory as banknotes, so you empty your inventory half as often.

The numbers are how many rocks of each ore there are. The Donator Dungeon is open to every donator rank, but its runite rocks are in the Super, Extreme and Legendary Donator sections. The Royal skilling dungeon is for Royal Donators and the Divine Skilling Zone for Divine Donators. Every Wilderness mine, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine dungeons are dangerous: other players can attack you, and you lose your items when you die (see Items Kept on Death).

Training by level

The numbers of ores below use the experience given in each section, without the Prospector kit or other bonuses.

Levels 1–30: copper and tin

Mine copper and tin (240 experience each) at home or in the Skilling Zone. Iron (level 15, 348 experience) takes a little longer per ore and gives about the same experience for your time, so you can switch to it if the copper and tin rocks are busy. Once your combat level is 100, the Wilderness mine east of West Dragons (::west, level 9–10) gives double experience for copper and tin.

Levels 30–85: coal

Coal gives 684 experience per ore and takes 4 ticks at level 99, which is more experience for your time than iron, mithril or adamantite. From 30 to 85 you need about 4,750 coal, or about 2,370 in the Wilderness: about 5 hours in the Skilling Zone, or under 3 hours in the Wilderness. The Skilling Zone has 12 coal rocks, but the Wilderness mine east of West Dragons (::west, level 9–10) has 34 coal rocks, gives double experience and is close to home.

Mithril (level 55) and adamantite (level 70) give fewer experience points for your time, but they are worth more skilling points: an adamantite ore sells for 120 skilling points, a coal for 40.

Levels 85–99: runite

Runite ore gives 6,000 experience (runite can only be mined where Mining gives double experience) and is worth 700 skilling points. A rock is empty for 30 ticks after each ore, so try to have two or three rocks to yourself. From 85 to 99 you need about 1,630 runite ores, about 5 hours with rocks to yourself. The Resource Area has 8 runite rocks, the Donator Dungeon 8, the Royal skilling dungeon 7 and the Divine Skilling Zone 16, and there are 2 more in the Lava Maze and 3 on the Ice Plateau.

Levels 92–99: amethyst

Divine Donators can mine amethyst in the Divine Skilling Zone: 9,600 experience per crystal, and the 16 crystals never run out, so you can keep mining without moving. From 92 to 99 you need about 680 amethyst, about 4 hours of mining. You can start at level 67, because the zone boosts your Mining level by 25.

Copper or tin 1+ 1,576 378,184 756,369 31,515

Runite gives the most experience for your time, about 1.8 million an hour at level 99 (1.9 million with a crystal pickaxe), as long as you have rocks to yourself. Amethyst gives about a tenth less, but it never runs out, so you need very few clicks. Coal gives about 1.4 million an hour in the Wilderness, three quarters of runite, and about 700,000 in the Skilling Zone, the most of any rock in a safe area.

Iron 15+ 1,234 30,862 15,431 859,206

Amethyst earns the most skilling points: about 255,000 an hour (280,000 with a crystal pickaxe), about a fifth more than runite's 215,000 to 225,000. For everyone without the Divine Donator rank, runite is the best money from Mining: one runite ore is worth almost six adamantite ores. In safe areas adamantite earns the most, about 80,000 an hour.

Shooting Star

Main article: Shooting Star

Five times a day a Shooting Star lands in the Wilderness. You need a combat level of 126 to mine it, but no pickaxe or Mining level: the pickaxe you mine it with depends on how much stardust you carry. Every time you mine the star you get a handful of stardust and 100 Mining experience before bonuses, which is 200 because the star always lands in the Wilderness. The Prospector kit counts too. You can sell the stardust to Stark (::stark).

A star lasts 25 minutes and each mine takes about 7.5 seconds, so you can mine it about 190 times: about 125,000 stardust at level 99 and 38,000 Mining experience (200 a mine) before the other bonuses. Every 5 Mining levels add 12 stardust a mine, and your boosted level counts. The Stardust Frenzy scroll doubles your stardust, the Starburst clan perk adds half, and the Well of Goodwill's Double Wildy perk doubles it again.

In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Mining at the crashed star without a pickaxe once you have level 50 Mining. You do not get any ores, and the experience is lower than active mining, but your character keeps mining while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Prospector kit, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have an AFK mining spot in their own zone.
