Fletching training

From Roat Pkz
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Fletching is the skill of making bows, crossbows and ammunition: you cut logs into bows, stocks and shafts with a knife, string bows, and put arrows, javelins, darts and bolts together. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience everything gives and how Fletching earns skilling points. Fletching gives double experience in the Resource Area and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and magic and redwood logs can only be fletched in the Wilderness from level 30 and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.

Quick guide

Fletching Levels Method Where
1–10 Arrow shafts from logs Anywhere outside the Wilderness
10–25 Longbows from logs, then string them Anywhere outside the Wilderness
25–40 Oak longbows, strung Anywhere outside the Wilderness
40–55 Willow longbows, strung Anywhere outside the Wilderness
55–70 Maple longbows, strung Anywhere outside the Wilderness
70–85 Yew longbows, strung; magic shortbows from level 80 Anywhere; magic logs in the Resource Area
85–99 Magic longbows, strung Resource Area, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons

Cutting a bow and then stringing it gives experience twice for every log, and the Fletching Tutor pays more for the strung bow than the log and bow string cost. Gem-tipped bolts, arrows and javelins give more experience for your time but need tips, heads or gems; see Best experience.

How Fletching works

  • Cutting logs: use a knife on logs and choose a bow, a crossbow stock or shafts. Your character cuts one log every 3 ticks (1.8 seconds) until you run out. The knife must be in your inventory.
  • Stringing: use a bow string on an unstrung bow, or a crossbow string on an unstrung crossbow. Every bow takes 2 ticks (1.2 seconds).
  • Crossbows: use crossbow limbs from Smithing on a stock to make an unstrung crossbow, 3 ticks each.
  • Arrows and javelins: you add feathers to 15 arrow shafts to make 15 headless arrows, arrowtips to 15 headless arrows, or javelin heads to 15 javelin shafts. Every set of 15 takes 2 ticks, and one click makes up to 10 sets.
  • Darts and bolts: you add feathers to dart tips or unfinished bolts, 10 at a time. They are made the moment you use the items on each other.
  • Gem-tipped bolts: use a chisel on a cut gem to make 12 bolt tips (5 ticks), then add 10 tips to 10 bolts (2 ticks per set of 10).
  • Where you can fletch: anywhere, including the Wilderness. Magic and redwood logs and magic bows can only be fletched and strung in the Wilderness from level 30 and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. The Resource Area and the Royal and Divine dungeons give double experience.
  • Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to fletch in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Fletching in the Wilderness.

Rates per hour

The tables below show what every way of training gives per hour, so you can compare them:

  • The hourly amounts are what an efficient player gets in real play: every inventory takes about 10 seconds to restock at the tutor on top of the fletching itself. That works out at about 1,828 bows strung, 1,647 logs cut or 955 logs cut and strung an hour. You get less if you restock slower or take breaks.
  • Boosts: pick the boosts you have in the bar above each table: a Double XP or Double Harvest scroll (or the Well of Goodwill perk), the Fletching knife, the Fletching XP clan perk and your vote streak. Every table on the page then shows your rates with them, and your browser remembers what you picked. With nothing picked the tables show base rates. How the boosts add up is under Experience bonuses.
  • XP/h is the experience you get an hour. XP/h Resource Area is the same in the Resource Area and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, where Fletching gives double experience. The rest of the Wilderness gives the normal amount.
  • SKP/h is your profit in skilling points: what the tutors pay you for what you make, plus the points fletching gives, minus what you pay them for the logs, bows, strings, shafts and gems it uses up. A negative number is what the method costs you. Items no shop sells, such as limbs, arrowtips and bolts, count as free. It is the same everywhere, in the Wilderness too. Double Harvest doubles the extra skilling points that shafts, stringing, crossbows and bolt tips pay.
  • PKP/h is that profit in PK points: right-click your skilling points and choose Claim-PKP to get 1 PK point for every 2 skilling points.

Bows

There are three ways to train with bows: cut logs and sell the unstrung bows (or stocks or shafts) to the Fletching Tutor, string unstrung bows you buy from the tutor, or cut logs and string the bows yourself. Stringing gives the same experience as cutting, except for the magic longbow (830 for cutting, 920 for stringing), and you need the same level for both. Magic logs, redwood logs and magic bows can only be fletched in the Wilderness from level 30 and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, so their normal XP/h is for the Wilderness outside the Resource Area.

"SKP per log" is what the Fletching Tutor pays for the unstrung bow or stock minus what the log costs. Shafts pay back what the log is worth, partly in skilling points and partly as the shafts themselves (the tutor buys them back for 1 skilling point each), and add the profit in the table. Redwood logs can only be cut into shafts.

You buy the unstrung bows and the bow strings (20 skilling points each) from the Fletching Tutor. Stringing pays back the unstrung bow and the string and adds 10 (normal bows) to 105 (magic bows) skilling points, which is the "SKP per bow". You need no knife or logs, so a trip is 13 bows and 13 strings.

Cutting and stringing each log yourself earns the profit of both: what the unstrung bow is worth over the log, and what stringing adds. It gives the most experience per log, but an inventory holds only 13 logs and 13 strings, so you make fewer bows an hour than when you only cut or only string.

The (u) row is putting the limbs on the stock (13 a trip); the other row is making the crossbow and stringing it (9 a trip, as each needs a stock, limbs and a string). "SKP per crossbow" counts the stock at the Fletching Tutor's price, because you could sell it instead, and the limbs as free. Putting the crossbow together pays 10 to 40 skilling points and stringing it 60 to 276, so a rune crossbow earns less than selling the yew stock would. You smith the limbs with Smithing and string the unstrung crossbow with a crossbow string, which you can spin from flax with Crafting or buy from the Fletching Tutor for 20 skilling points.

The experience is for a whole set: 15 arrows or javelins, or 10 darts or bolts. Arrows and javelins take 2 ticks a set and one click makes up to 10 sets. Darts and bolts are made the moment you use the items on each other; their rates assume a set about every 1.2 seconds, depending on how fast you click. Headless arrows and javelins use up 15 shafts a set, which the Fletching Tutor sells for 1 skilling point each; the other sets use only smithed parts, so they cost no skilling points. Before you add arrowtips, you make headless arrows from 15 arrow shafts and 15 feathers (level 1, 75 experience per 15). Javelins use javelin shafts and javelin heads, darts use dart tips and feathers, and bolts use unfinished bolts and feathers. You smith the arrowtips, javelin heads, dart tips and unfinished bolts with Smithing, and you make the amethyst tips and heads from amethyst with Crafting.

Cutting a gem into 12 bolt tips takes 5 ticks and pays 16 skilling points for an opal, up to 60 for an onyx. "SKP per action" takes off the Crafting Tutor's price for the cut gem, so only opal bolt tips make a profit. Tipping 10 bolts takes 2 ticks and costs no skilling points. You buy cut gems from the Crafting Tutor or cut them yourself with Crafting. Plain bolts can be spawned, or fletched from unfinished bolts.

The tutor also gives out knives and feathers for free and sells arrow shafts and javelin shafts for 1 skilling point each, bow strings and crossbow strings for 20 and the Fletching knife (10%) for 100,000. Items you buy with the Buy-X option come as banknotes; a Piles NPC turns them back into items in the Resource Area and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. The Woodsman tutor sells logs for the same prices, and the Fletching Tutor also stands in the Resource Area and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.

You need a knife in your inventory to cut logs and a feather for every arrow, dart and bolt. The Fletching Tutor gives both out for free. Cutting gems into bolt tips needs a chisel, which the Crafting Tutor gives out for free.

Fletching knife

Main article: Other experience items

The Fletching knife (10%) gives 10% more Fletching experience while you wield it in your weapon slot, for everything you fletch. Keep a normal knife in your inventory to cut logs. The Fletching Tutor sells it for 100,000 skilling points. It has no level requirement and cannot be traded.

Experience bonuses

Everything you fletch gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses. Pick them in the bar above any table to see your rates with them.

Bonus Effect
Fletching knife (10%) +10%
Resource Area, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons +100%: double experience
Vote streak +1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
Fletching XP (10%) clan perk The total is multiplied by 1.1
Double XP scroll or the Well of Goodwill's Double XP perk The total is doubled

The knife, Resource Area and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, a magic longbow (u) gives 830 experience. In the Resource Area it gives 1,660, with the Fletching knife 1,743 (830 × 2.1), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 2,158 (× 2.6). The clan perk raises that to 2,373 and double experience to 4,747. The rest of the Wilderness gives normal Fletching experience.

Level boosts

Your boosted Fletching level counts for the level requirements:

  • An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Fletching level to 99 for an hour, so you can fletch magic longbows at any level. A Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour. Both are on the Scrolls page.
  • The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.

Other scrolls

  • The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk double the extra skilling points that cutting shafts, stringing, crossbows and bolt tips pay (pick Double Harvest in the bar above the tables to see your profit with it), and every dart and bolt action gives twice as many darts or bolts.

The rest of the Wilderness gives normal experience, and you can fletch magic and redwood logs anywhere from level 30, for example in the Donator Dungeon. Every Wilderness spot and the Royal and Divine dungeons are dangerous: you lose your items when you die, as described on Items Kept on Death.

Skilling points

Fletching earns skilling points in several ways, and you keep what you make unless you sell it back:

  • Unstrung bows and stocks sell to the Fletching Tutor for more than the log costs: 20 skilling points more for logs and oak logs, 30 for willow, 40 for maple, 50 for yew and 135 for magic logs.
  • Stringing pays back the unstrung bow and the bow string and adds 10 (normal bows) to 105 (magic bows) skilling points. A strung magic bow made from a bought log earns 240 skilling points in total.
  • Shafts pay back the log and add 16 (logs) to 332 (redwood logs) skilling points.
  • Crossbows pay 10 to 40 skilling points when you put them together and 60 to 276 when you string them.
  • Bolt tips pay 16 to 60 skilling points for every gem.
  • You can turn skilling points into PK points at 2 skilling points for 1 PK point.

Training by level

The numbers of logs below count cutting and stringing each bow, without the Fletching knife or other bonuses.

Levels 1–10: arrow shafts

Cut logs into arrow shafts (25 experience per log); you need about 47 logs to reach level 10. From level 5 you can also cut and string shortbows.

Levels 10–70: longbows

Cut longbows and string them: 100 experience per log from level 10, 250 per oak log from 25, 420 per willow log from 40 and 580 per maple log from 55. From 10 to 70 that is about 70 logs, 120 oak logs, 310 willow logs and 990 maple logs. Every log you turn into a strung bow also earns 30 to 70 skilling points. Shortbows need fewer levels but give less experience, so switch to the longbow of each log as soon as you can.

Levels 70–85: yew longbows

Yew longbows give 750 experience per log, cut and strung, and 85 skilling points of profit. From 70 to 85 you need about 3,360 yew logs. From level 80 you can fletch magic shortbows in the Resource Area instead: 3,320 experience per log there, cut and strung.

Levels 85–99: magic longbows

Magic longbows give 830 experience for cutting and 920 for stringing, 3,500 per log in the Resource Area or the Royal and Divine dungeons, and 240 skilling points of profit. From 85 to 99 you need about 2,790 magic logs there. The Fletching Tutor in the Resource Area sells magic logs, so you never have to leave.

Gem-tipped bolts

From level 65, diamond bolts give more experience for your time than yew longbows, and dragonstone bolts (71) and onyx bolts (73) even more. One onyx gives 12 bolt tips (100 experience) and 12 onyx bolts (2,400 experience). Gem bolts cost skilling points instead of earning them, because you use up the gems.

Ammunition gives the most experience for your time, but you need the tips, heads or gems first: smithing or crafting them takes longer than the fletching itself, and gems and amethyst cost skilling points. Of the bows, stringing bought magic longbows gives the most experience an hour, about 1,681,760 base experience (3,363,520 in the Resource Area).

Shafts from magic and redwood logs earn the most skilling points, followed by magic bows. All of these need the Wilderness from level 30 or the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons; outside them, yew shafts and yew bows earn the most.

AFK Fletching

Main article: AFK Skilling

In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Fletching at the AFK flax without any logs once you have level 50 Fletching. You do not make anything or earn skilling points, and the experience is lower than active Fletching, but your character keeps working while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Fletching knife, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have AFK flax in their own zone.
