Mobile/Settings and tips
This page covers the settings worth changing on mobile, how to get more room on a small screen, tips for battery and performance, and fixes for the most common problems.
Settings
Most settings are the same as on a computer and live in the same places. See Settings for the full list.
| Setting | Where | Notes for mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom | Pinch the screen, or the zoom slider in the Settings tab (Display) | Pinch with two fingers to zoom in and out at any time. |
| Sound | Settings tab | Music, sound effects and area sounds work like on a computer. See No sound below if you hear nothing. |
| Prayer Tooltips | Quest tab settings | Off by default on mobile, so tapping a prayer doesn't pop up its description. Switch it on if you want the descriptions back. |
| RuneLite plugins | Settings tab, the RuneLite button in the bottom row | Shows RuneLite buttons on the screen: Configuration to switch plugins on and off and change their options, and the XP Tracker, PvP Fight History and Gambling Tracker when those plugins are on. Tap the button again to hide them. A few plugins that only make sense with a mouse and keyboard aren't offered on mobile. |
| Hotkey bar | ::hotkeys |
Pick your five actions and up to three loadouts. See Mobile/Hotkey bar. |
Getting more room on screen
- Hide the minimap: tap the round world map button next to it. Tap it again to bring it back.
- Fold the second column of side stones: tap the fold button at the bottom of the first column.
- Fold or hide the hotkey bar: tap its Hotkeys label to fold it, or hold it and choose Hide Hotkeys.
::hotkeysbrings it back. - Hide the chat: tap the Chat button in the top left. It turns red when someone messages you.
- Play full screen: add the game to your home screen. See Add it to your home screen.
Performance and battery
The game adjusts itself to your phone: if the frame rate drops, it draws less of the world in the distance until it runs smoothly again. These tips help on older phones and in long sessions:
- Close other apps and browser tabs before you play. Phones close games that use a lot of memory, and other apps make that more likely.
- Play from the home screen icon rather than a browser tab with many other tabs open.
- Plug in your phone for long sessions. A 3D game uses more battery than most apps.
- Lower the screen brightness to save battery.
- Keep your phone cool. Phones slow down when they get hot, for example while charging in a case or in the sun.
- Use Wi-Fi or a strong mobile signal. A weak signal can make the game freeze for a moment or disconnect.
Troubleshooting
"Outdated client"
A new version of the game is out. The page reloads itself and loads the new version, so wait a moment and log in again. If it keeps happening, close the tab or app completely (swipe it away in your phone's app switcher) and open it again.
While you're playing, a bar may also say A new version of the client is available. Tap Refresh now to update right away, or Later to keep playing.
The game closed or went back to the login screen
Phones close apps in the background to free up memory. If you were logged in with a saved account (Remember me ticked), the game logs you back in by itself when you open it again. Otherwise just log in again. If it happens often, see Performance and battery.
Disconnected
If your connection drops for a moment, the game tries to reconnect by itself. If it can't, you're taken back to the login screen; check your Wi-Fi or mobile data and log in again.
The keyboard won't open
- Make sure the chat is open: the Keyboard button only shows while it is.
- Turn your phone sideways. Typing needs landscape, and the game asks you to rotate if your phone is upright. If the screen won't turn, switch off your phone's rotation lock.
No sound
- Tap the game once. Browsers only play sound after you've touched the page.
- Check the sound settings in the Settings tab.
- On an iPhone or iPad, check the phone isn't on silent mode.
- Turn up your phone's media volume.
A link didn't open
When the game opens a website (for example the store or the vote page), your browser may block it. A bar then asks Open link to ...? Tap Open to go there.
Taps open the wrong thing
A tap is taken by the nearest button when it just misses one, so tap a little more carefully near small buttons or zoom in with a pinch. Holding your finger down too long opens the options menu instead of tapping. See Mobile/Controls.
