Run energy
Run energy is the percentage shown on the run orb next to your minimap. While run is turned on you move two tiles a tick instead of one. On Roat Pkz, running only uses up energy in the Wilderness and a few other dangerous or competitive places. Everywhere else you can run as much as you like, and your energy refills quickly on its own.
Overview
- Drains in: the Wilderness, the Royal and Divine donator PvP areas, the Great Olm fight and Castle Wars.
- Everywhere else: running never drains energy, and it refills by 2% every tick (from empty to full in 30 seconds).
- Drain per running tick: 0.64% + 0.01% for every kg you carry, up to 1.28% at 64 kg or more.
- Stamina effect: running drains 70% less.
- Max cape: running drains 25% less.
- When your energy reaches 0, run turns off until you have some energy again.
Where run energy drains
Run energy only goes down when you run inside one of these areas:
- the Wilderness;
- the PvP areas of the Royal and Divine donator zones, such as their PvP skilling dungeons and the Divine PvM cave;
- the Great Olm room in the Chambers of Xeric;
- Castle Wars.
Outside these areas it refills by 2% every game tick, whether you are running or not. Riding the Christmas Bicycle (2024) stops run energy from draining anywhere.
Draining
Energy only drains on ticks where you actually run. Each running tick drains:
- 0.64% as a base, plus
- 0.01% for every kg you weigh, counting everything you wear and carry, up to 64 kg. Weighing less than nothing counts as 0 kg.
The stamina effect and a max cape then reduce this:
- A stamina effect (from a stamina or extended stamina potion) cuts the drain to 30%.
- Wearing any max cape cuts it by a further 25%.
| Weight | Drain per running tick | Running time from 100% | With a stamina effect | With stamina and a max cape |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 kg | 0.64% | about 94 seconds | about 5 minutes 13 seconds | about 6 minutes 57 seconds |
| 20 kg | 0.84% | about 71 seconds | about 3 minutes 58 seconds | about 5 minutes 18 seconds |
| 36 kg | 1.00% | 60 seconds | 3 minutes 20 seconds | about 4 minutes 27 seconds |
| 64 kg or more | 1.28% | about 47 seconds | about 2 minutes 36 seconds | about 3 minutes 28 seconds |
The times are for running without stopping and without drinking anything, and the stamina columns assume the stamina effect lasts the whole time (one extended stamina dose lasts 4 minutes). A game tick is 0.6 seconds.
Things that drain faster
- Carrying the Wilderness Chest triples your drain.
- Carrying the Gold Wilderness Chest empties your run energy and you can't turn run back on while you hold it.
- A Morrigan's throwing axe special attack hamstrings you for a short time, making your run drain six times as fast.
- Some special attacks stun you so that you can't turn run on until the stun ends.
Regaining energy
Inside the draining areas, your energy comes back slowly on every tick you are not running (standing still or walking):
- (8 + your Agility level ÷ 6) ÷ 100 percent each tick, which is 0.245% a tick at 99 Agility. From empty to full takes about 4 minutes at 99 Agility and about 12 minutes at level 1.
- Wearing the full Graceful outfit (hood, top, legs, gloves, boots and cape, in any colour) triples this, so it takes about 82 seconds at 99 Agility.
Outside the draining areas you get 2% every tick instead, so you are back to full within 30 seconds.
Potions and food
| Item | Run energy restored | Other effect |
|---|---|---|
| 20% | Stamina effect for 2 minutes (a new dose won't shorten a longer timer) | |
| 40% | Stamina effect for 4 minutes (a new dose sets the timer to 4 minutes) | |
| 20% | – | |
| Guthix rest | 5% | Heals 5 Hitpoints and helps against poison and venom |
You get a message 12 seconds before your stamina effect runs out, and another when it ends. Dying ends the stamina effect. The stamina potions can also go in a Chugging barrel.
Other ways to restore it
- Agility courses: completing a lap of any Agility course fully restores your run energy.
- Max cape: the max cape's run energy option restores your energy to 100%, up to 5 times a day (the day resets at 00:00 server time).
- Restoration pools at
::homerefill your run energy along with your Hitpoints and Prayer. - Royal Donators and higher ranks can click the run orb to restore it to full outside PvP areas.
- Castle Wars bandages restore 30% run energy as well as some Hitpoints.
- Your run energy is set to full when you respawn after dying. Duels and minigames also reset it to full.
October 2026 changes
In the October 2026 update weight started to count properly towards run energy drain, using the rates on this page. Since then, light players drain slower than before, and players heavier than about 36 kg drain faster. The July 2026 update had already made Agility course laps refill run energy completely.
