Hunter training

Hunter is the skill of catching animals in traps: birds in bird snares, salamanders and lizards in net traps and chinchompas in box traps. You can also catch implings with a butterfly net. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience and how many skilling points every animal gives and how often you catch it. Unlike skills such as Fishing, Mining and Thieving, Hunter gives the same experience everywhere: the Wilderness has the best animals, black salamanders and black chinchompas, and lets you set one more trap, but it does not double your experience.
Quick guide
From level 69 you can also hunt implings, which give a lot of experience per catch but only appear one at a time; see Implings.
How Hunter works
- Laying traps: use the Lay option on a bird snare or a box trap in your inventory to set it on the tile you stand on. Net traps are set on young trees with the Set-trap option, and you need a rope and a small fishing net in your inventory. Then wait for an animal to walk into the trap.
- Catching: when an animal walks into your trap, there is a chance that it is caught; the chance rises with your Hunter level and is shown in the table below. A caught animal stays in the trap until you take it out with the Check option, which gives you the experience and skilling points. A failed bird snare or box trap has to be dismantled and laid again, and a failed net trap falls down and drops your rope and net on the ground.
- Box traps: the Reset option on a full or failed box trap takes the catch and lays the trap again in one go. Grey chinchompas are no longer caught in your box traps once your Hunter level is 63, the level for red chinchompas.
- Traps fall over: a trap falls over 1 minute after you lay it if nothing is in it, and 2 minutes after you lay it if it has caught something. The catch is then lost, so check your traps in time. The trap itself lands on the ground for you to pick up. Your traps also fall when you log out.
- How many traps: you can set 1 trap of each kind, 2 from level 20, 3 from level 40, 4 from level 60 and 5 from level 80. From level 80 you can set six net traps and six box traps in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. Your boosted Hunter level counts.
- Where you can hunt: bird snares only work in the bird area of the Hunter area in the Skilling Zone (
::hunter). Net traps work in the Skilling Zone, in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and box traps in the chinchompa area of the Hunter area, in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. - Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to hunt in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Hunter in the Wilderness.
Animals
The catch chance rises by about 1% for every Hunter level between the two columns. The experience is the same everywhere and is before the bonuses in Experience bonuses. The skilling points go straight into your inventory. Every grey or black chinchompa you catch also goes into your inventory as a throwing weapon for Ranged; see Black chinchompa.
Implings
Main article: Impling
| Impling | Where it appears | Other requirements | XP per catch | Jar value | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 69 | Anywhere in the Skilling Zone | – | 10,000 | 15,000 PKP | |
| 72 | Divine Skilling Zone | 126 combat, Divine Donator | 12,000 | 60,000 PKP | |
| 79 | Wilderness, level 1–29 | 126 combat | 15,000 | 40,000 PKP | |
| 82 | Divine Slayer Cave | 126 combat, Divine Donator | 18,000 | 120,000 PKP | |
| 89 | Wilderness, level 30–55 | 126 combat | 25,000 | 80,000 PKP | |
| 92 | Divine Monster Dungeon | 126 combat, Divine Donator | 30,000 | 120,000 PKP |
- Catching: wield a
magic butterfly net, have an empty
impling jar in your inventory and click the impling. Once you reach it you always catch it, and it goes into your jar. - Where: only one of each impling is out at a time, somewhere in its area. When someone catches it, a new one appears within 15 minutes and everyone gets a message saying where. The Divine implings are only announced to Divine Donators.
- Wilderness implings: you need to have Bounty Hunter enabled to catch the dragon and lucky implings.
- Opening a jar with its Loot option gives you one reward from that impling's list (see Impling) and gives you back the empty impling jar. Full jars can be traded.
- The Hunter outfits, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count for implings too.
Equipment
Traps and tools
| Item | Used for | Hunter shop price (SKP) |
|---|---|---|
| Crimson swifts and tropical wagtails | 100 | |
| One of each for every net trap | Free | |
| Chinchompas | 100 | |
| Implings (wield it) | 50,000 | |
| Implings | 1,000 |

The Hunter shop belongs to the Hunting Tutor in the Hunter area of the Skilling Zone; ::hunter takes you right next to him, and two more Hunting Tutors stand in the Divine Skilling Zone. The shop buys bird snares and box traps back for their full price. Bird snares and box traps stack in your inventory.
Hunter outfits
Main article: Hunter gear
Every piece of a Hunter outfit adds the percentage in its name to your Hunter experience: 2% for the Larupia pieces (level 28), 3% for the Graahk pieces (level 38, the legs 28), 4% for the Kyatt pieces (level 52) and 5% for the Guild hunter pieces (level 72). There is no full-set bonus, so pieces of different outfits add up: a full Kyatt outfit gives 12%, and the four Guild hunter pieces give 20%. The Hunting Tutor sells all of them; see Hunter gear and Guild hunter outfit for the prices.
Experience bonuses
Every catch gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses:
| Bonus | Effect |
|---|---|
| +2% to +5% per piece, up to +20% with the full Guild hunter outfit | |
+1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
| |
| Hunter XP (10%) clan perk | The total is multiplied by 1.1 |
| The total is doubled |
The outfit and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, a black chinchompa gives 5,000 experience. With the full Guild hunter outfit it gives 6,000 (5,000 × 1.2), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 8,500 (× 1.7). The clan perk raises that to 9,350 and double experience to 18,700. There is no Wilderness bonus for Hunter.
Level boosts
Your boosted Hunter level counts for the level requirements, the catch chance and the number of traps you can set:
- An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Hunter level to 99 for an hour, so you can hunt black chinchompas at any level. A Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour. Both are on the Scrolls page.
- The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.
Other scrolls
- The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk double the skilling points from every animal you catch.

Training by level
The numbers of catches below use the experience in the table above, without the Hunter outfits or other bonuses. Not every animal that walks into a trap is caught, so you need more attempts than catches, especially at the start of each step.
Levels 1–19: crimson swifts
Buy a bird snare from the Hunting Tutor and lay it in the bird area of the Hunter area.
Crimson swifts give 400 experience each, and you need about 10 of them for level 19. You can set a second snare from level 20.
Levels 19–29: tropical wagtails
Tropical wagtails give 800 experience. You need about 11 of them to reach level 29.
Levels 29–47: swamp lizards
Bring a rope and a small fishing net for every net trap, both free from the Hunting Tutor, and set your traps on the young trees in the swamp lizard area.
Swamp lizards give 1,041 experience and 100 skilling points each. From 29 to 47 you need about 60 of them.
Levels 47–59: orange salamanders
Orange salamanders give 1,250 experience and 166 skilling points. From 47 to 59 you need about 140 of them. Grey chinchompas (level 53) give a little less experience.
Levels 59–67: red salamanders or red chinchompas
Red salamanders give 1,875 experience and 332 skilling points: about 160 of them take you from 59 to 67. From level 63 you can hunt
red chinchompas in the chinchompa area with box traps instead (2,000 experience, 432 skilling points).
Levels 67–85: black salamanders
Black salamanders give 4,166 experience and 1,024 skilling points, more than twice as much as anything in the Hunter area. They live in the Wilderness at level 19–20, a short walk from the Slayer Cave teleport, and in the Divine Skilling Zone. From 67 to 85 you need about 650 of them. If you would rather stay out of the Wilderness, red salamanders and red chinchompas take you all the way to 99.
Levels 85–99: black chinchompas
Black chinchompas give 5,000 experience, 1,500 skilling points and a black chinchompa each, which you can throw or trade; a black chinchompa is worth 3 PK points. Hunt them at ::chins (Wilderness level 31–35) or in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, with six box traps from level 80. From 85 to 99 you need about 1,960 black chinchompas.
Best experience
At level 99 the best animals compare like this:
| Animal | XP per catch | Catch chance (level 99) |
SKP per catch | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | 89% | 1,500 | Wilderness, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons | |
| 4,166 | 85% | 1,024 | Wilderness, Divine Skilling Zone | |
| 2,000 | 89% | 432 | Hunter area | |
| 1,875 | 95% | 332 | Hunter area |
Black chinchompas give the most experience and skilling points per catch, and you also keep the chinchompa. Implings give far more experience per catch, from 10,000 for a crystal impling to 25,000 for a lucky impling and 30,000 for a Divine monster impling, but there is only one of each at a time.
AFK Hunter
Main article: AFK Skilling
In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Hunter at the AFK bird snare without any traps once you have level 50 Hunter. You do not catch anything or earn skilling points, and the experience is lower than active hunting, but your character keeps hunting while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Hunter outfits, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have an AFK bird snare in their own zone.

Other rewards
- Pets: while you catch chinchompas in box traps you can receive a
Baby chinchompa skilling pet in the colour of the chinchompa you caught. Every kind of impling can also give its own impling pet, such as the
Pet Crystal impling. Pets come more often in the Wilderness and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. - Clue scrolls and Skilling Crates: you can also receive clue scrolls and
Skilling Crates while hunting. - Achievements give skilling points for your Hunter level and experience and for the number of chinchompas and salamanders you catch. Reaching level 99 also gives a
Silver XP Lamp. - Skillcapes: at level 99 you can wear the
Hunter cape, which the Skilling Master in the Skilling Zone gives out for free. With 200 million Hunter experience you can buy the Hunter mastery cape from him for 200,000 PK points.
