Farming training

Farming is the skill of growing herbs, trees and fruit trees in farming patches. This guide shows where the patches are on Roat Pkz, how long every crop takes to grow, how much experience it gives and how Farming earns skilling points. Every crop grows twice as fast in the Wilderness, in the Donator Dungeon and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and torstol, magic trees and dragonfruit trees can only be grown there. The herbs you grow are sold for skilling points, and torstol goes into Herblore.
Quick guide
Trees and fruit trees give by far the most experience, so plant them in every tree and fruit tree patch you can reach and grow herbs while you wait. The Farming Tutor and the Tool Leprechauns sell every seed, sapling and tool.
How Farming works
- Your own patches: every player has their own crops in every patch, so nobody else can use or harvest them. Crops only grow while you are logged in.
- Weeds: a patch you have never used, or that has stood empty for a while, is full of weeds. Rake it three times (4 experience each) before you plant. You need a rake in your inventory.
- Herbs: use a herb seed on a herb patch, with a seed dibber in your inventory. When the herbs are fully grown, click the patch to pick them, one herb every 3 ticks. A patch gives 3 to 15 herbs, one more if you treated it with compost. Every herb you pick gives experience.
- Trees: use a sapling on a tree patch, with a spade in your inventory. When the tree is fully grown, click it to check its health, which gives most of the experience and some skilling points. Then chop it down with an axe to clear the patch; that gives Woodcutting experience and pays back the price of the sapling.
- Fruit trees: plant a sapling the same way. When the tree is fully grown, check its health, pick its 6 fruit (each pick gives experience and skilling points), and then chop it down like a tree.
- Compost: use compost on a patch before you plant to get extra experience from everything you do on that patch until you harvest it; see Compost.
- Spade: use a spade on a patch to dig up a crop that is still growing, if you want to plant something else.
- Wilderness patches: crops grow twice as fast in the Wilderness, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and herbs you pick there come out as banknotes. Torstol, magic trees and dragonfruit trees can only be planted there. You need a combat level of at least 100 to farm in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Farming in the Wilderness.
- Messages: the game tells you when one of your patches is fully grown and where it is.
Herbs
| Herb | XP for planting | XP per herb picked | Seed and herb price (SKP) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 35 | 90 | 60 | |
| 14 | 40 | 100 | 80 | |
| 19 | 50 | 120 | 100 | |
| 26 | 60 | 135 | 120 | |
| 32 | 70 | 150 | 140 | |
| 38 | 75 | 165 | 160 | |
| 44 | 85 | 180 | 180 | |
| 50 | 90 | 200 | 200 | |
| 56 | 100 | 230 | 220 | |
| 62 | 110 | 245 | 240 | |
| 67 | 125 | 260 | 260 | |
| 73 | 135 | 285 | 280 | |
| 79 | 175 | 300 | 300 | |
| 85 | 195 | 395 | 400 |
Herbs take 4 minutes to grow, or 2 minutes in the Wilderness, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. Torstol can only be planted there. The Farming Tutor and the Tool Leprechauns sell each seed and buy the herb back for the same price, so every herb after the first is profit. All experience is before the bonuses in Experience bonuses.
Trees
Magic trees can only be planted in the Wilderness, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. Chopping a tree down gives Woodcutting experience, a tenth of the Farming experience for checking it, and pays back the price of the sapling in skilling points. You need an axe you can use, but no Woodcutting level for the tree.
Fruit trees
Every fruit tree takes 12 minutes 50 seconds to grow, or 6 minutes 25 seconds in the Wilderness, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and has 6 fruit to pick. Dragonfruit trees can only be planted there. Like a tree, a fruit tree is chopped down at the end, which pays back the price of the sapling.
Compost
| Compost | XP bonus | Extra herb chance (per herb picked) |
XP for adding it | Get it from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| +5% | about 6% | 18 | Can be spawned | |
| +10% | about 9% | 26 | Can be spawned | |
| +20% | about 16% | 36 | Farming shop, 10 SKP | |
| +20% | about 16% | 36 | Farming shop, 25,000 SKP |
Use the compost on a weeded patch before you plant; it counts for everything you do on that patch until you harvest it or chop the tree down. Every compost also adds one herb to a herb patch. The Bottomless ultracompost works like ultracompost but is never used up. You can upgrade a patch's compost to a better one, but not add the same one twice.
Equipment
Tools
You need a
rake for weeds, a
seed dibber for herb seeds and a
spade for saplings, all in your inventory. The Farming Tutor and the Tool Leprechauns give them out for free. To chop down trees and fruit trees you also need an axe; see Woodcutting training.
Farmer's outfit
Main article: Farmer's outfit

Each piece of the Farmer's outfit gives 2% more Farming experience, and all four give 10%. The Farming Tutor and the Tool Leprechauns sell the strawhat for 20,000 skilling points, the jacket for 40,000, the boro trousers for 30,000 and the boots for 10,000, 100,000 for the outfit. The bonus counts for raking, planting, adding compost, checking trees and picking herbs and fruit.
Magic secateurs
Main article: Other experience items
The Magic secateurs (10%) go in your weapon slot. They give 10% more Farming experience on top of the outfit, and every herb you pick has about a 16% chance to make the patch give one more herb. The Farming Tutor and the Tool Leprechauns sell them for 100,000 skilling points. They have no level requirement and cannot be traded.
Experience bonuses
Every Farming action gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses:
| Bonus | Effect |
|---|---|
| +2% per piece, +10% for the full outfit | |
| +10% | |
| +5% to +20% | |
+1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
| |
| Farming XP (10%) clan perk | The total is multiplied by 1.1 |
| The total is doubled |
The outfit, secateurs, compost and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, checking a yew tree gives 35,640 experience. On a patch with ultracompost it gives 42,768 (× 1.2), with the full Farmer's outfit and the Magic secateurs as well 49,896 (× 1.4), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 67,716 (× 1.9). The clan perk raises that to 74,487 and double experience to 148,975. Farming has no double experience in the Wilderness: crops grow twice as fast there instead.
Level boosts
Your boosted Farming level counts for the level requirements:
- An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Farming level to 99 for an hour, so you can plant magic trees and dragonfruit trees at any level. A Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour. Both are on the Scrolls page.
- The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.
Other scrolls
- The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk give you two herbs for every herb you pick, and raise the skilling points for picking fruit and for chopping down trees.
- With the Noted Gatherer scroll, about half of the herbs you pick in safe areas come out as banknotes.

Not in the Wilderness, but a donator PvP dungeon: other players can attack you
Level 32-33 – Donator Dungeon (::donator-dungeon), Normal Donator section - counts as Wilderness · 3054-3060, 2508-2514
The Donator Dungeon is open to every donator rank, but its deeper sections need higher ranks. Torstol, magic trees and dragonfruit trees can be grown in every location except the Skilling Zone. The Wilderness patches, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine dungeons are dangerous: other players can attack you, and you lose your items when you die (see Items Kept on Death).

Shops
| Shop | Where | |
|---|---|---|
| Farming Tutor | Skilling Zone (::farming), Divine Skilling Zone
| |
| Tool Leprechaun | Two in the Skilling Zone, East Wilderness, Donator Dungeon (Normal, Super and Extreme sections), Royal skilling dungeon, Divine Skilling Zone | |
Both sell the same Farming shop for skilling points: the rake, seed dibber and spade for free, every herb seed and sapling at the prices in the tables above, ultracompost (10), the Bottomless ultracompost (25,000), the Magic secateurs (100,000) and the Farmer's outfit (100,000). They buy every herb for the price of its seed.
Skilling points
- Herbs: a herb sells for the same price as its seed, so a patch earns the price of every herb after the first. A torstol patch with 9 herbs earns 3,200 skilling points.
- Trees: checking a tree pays 1,000 (oak) to 3,200 (magic) skilling points, and chopping it down pays back the sapling, so the check is all profit.
- Fruit trees: checking pays 200 (apple) to 3,000 (dragonfruit) skilling points, every fruit 2 to 37, and chopping the tree down pays back the sapling. A palm tree earns 3,010 skilling points and a dragonfruit tree 3,222.
- You can turn skilling points into PK points at 2 skilling points for 1 PK point.
Training by level
The numbers below use the experience in the tables above, without compost, the Farmer's outfit or other bonuses. A tree counts its planting and checking experience.
Levels 1–15: herbs
Grow
guam leaves, and
marrentill from level 14, in the five Skilling Zone herb patches. A guam patch with 9 herbs gives 845 experience, so a few patches take you to level 15.
Levels 15–30: oak trees and apple trees
An
oak tree gives 8,652 experience and pays 1,000 skilling points; two of them take you from 15 to 30. Plant
apple trees in the fruit tree patches from level 27 and keep the herb patches busy.
Levels 30–60: willow and maple trees
Plant
willow trees (15,476 experience) from level 30 and
maple trees (23,472) from 45, with the best fruit tree you can grow next to them. You need about 4 willow trees from 30 to 45 and 10 maple trees from 45 to 60. The East Wilderness patches grow everything twice as fast.
Levels 60–75: yew trees and palm trees
Yew trees give 37,068 experience and
palm trees (from 68) 17,726. From 60 to 75 you need about 26 yew trees, and every yew tree earns 3,000 skilling points.
Levels 75–99: magic trees and dragonfruit trees
Magic trees (47,808 experience) and
dragonfruit trees (26,505, from level 81) only grow outside the Skilling Zone, and grow twice as fast there: a magic tree in 13 minutes 48 seconds and a dragonfruit tree in 6 minutes 25 seconds. From 75 to 99 you need about 248 magic trees, or about 345 yew trees from 60 to 99. Keep yew trees and palm trees growing in the Skilling Zone at the same time, and grow
torstol from level 85 in the Wilderness herb patches.
Best experience
| Crop | XP per patch | Growing time | Growing time (Wilderness) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 47,808 | – | 13 min 48 s | |
| 37,068 | 27 min 12 s | 13 min 36 s | |
| 26,505 | – | 6 min 25 s | |
| 17,726 | 12 min 50 s | 6 min 25 s | |
| 3,750 | – | 2 min |
The experience per patch counts planting, checking and picking the fruit or herbs, before bonuses. Trees and fruit trees grow in different patches, so grow both at once. In the Wilderness patches a dragonfruit tree is ready in 6 minutes 25 seconds and a magic tree in 13 minutes 48 seconds.
AFK Farming
Main article: AFK Skilling
In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Farming at the AFK banana tree without any seeds once you have level 50 Farming. You do not grow anything or earn skilling points, and the experience is lower than active Farming, but your character keeps working while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Farmer's outfit, the Magic secateurs, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have an AFK banana tree in their own zone.

Tangleroot skilling pet. It comes more often in the Wilderness and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. - Clue scrolls and Skilling Crates: you can also receive clue scrolls and
Skilling Crates while farming. - Achievements give skilling points for your Farming level and experience and for the number of herb, tree and fruit tree patches you farm. Reaching level 99 also gives a
Silver XP Lamp. - Skillcapes: at level 99 you can wear the
Farming cape, which the Skilling Master in the Skilling Zone gives out for free. With 200 million Farming experience you can buy the Farming mastery cape from him for 200,000 PK points.
