Fishing training

Fishing is the skill of catching fish at fishing spots. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience every fish gives and what to do with your catch: sell it for skilling points or cook it with Cooking. Every fish gives double experience in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and the four best fish (anglerfish, dark crabs, halibut and marlin) can only be caught there.
Quick guide

Any fish gives twice the experience in the Wilderness, so the Wilderness spots are worth it once you can defend yourself. Other high-level options are dark crabs and sharks in the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, which also give double experience; see Training by level.
How Fishing works
- Fishing spots are the bubbling spots in the water. Each spot has one or two options, such as Net, Bait, Lure, Cage or Harpoon, and each option catches its own fish. The halibut and marlin are caught at their own Halibut shoals and Marlin shoals.
- Which fish: you always catch the best fish of that option that your level, tools and bait allow. On Net you catch shrimps, mixed with anchovies from level 15, until level 62, and from then on only monkfish. On Bait you catch a mix of sardines and herring from level 10, and on Lure a mix of trout and salmon from level 30. Cage and Harpoon always give the best fish you can catch, so from level 76 the Harpoon option only gives sharks.
- Tools and bait: nets, rods and lobster pots must be in your inventory. Every catch uses up one fishing bait, feather, dark fishing bait or fine fish offcut. The basic Harpoon must be in your inventory too, but the dragon, infernal and crystal harpoons also work from your weapon slot.
- Speed: each catch takes a random time around an average that depends on the fish and your Fishing level. At level 1 a catch takes about three times as long as at level 99, and at level 50 about twice as long. Levels above 99 do not make you any faster. Harpoon fish are also faster with a better harpoon. Times on this page are in game ticks of 0.6 seconds.
- Moving spots: most fishing spots move to a spot nearby every few minutes, so look around if yours disappears.
- Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to fish in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Fishing in the Wilderness.
Rates per hour
The rate tables show what every way of fishing gives per hour, so you can compare them:
- The hourly amounts are what an efficient player gets in real play. Every catch takes the time its fish and your Fishing level allow, and emptying an inventory takes about 10 seconds. Spots also move every 3 to 5 minutes, and you lose the catch you were on and the time it takes to start again, so even quick players catch about three quarters of the fish the catch times allow. In the Divine Skilling Zone the spots never move, and you catch about a quarter more.
- Boosts: the bar above each table has your Fishing level, your harpoon and the boosts you have: a Double XP, Double Harvest or Noted Gatherer scroll (or the Well of Goodwill perk), the Angler outfit, the Fishing XP clan perk, the max cape, your vote streak and the Divine Skilling Zone. Every table on the page then shows your rates, and your browser remembers what you picked. With nothing picked the tables show level 99 with a basic harpoon and no boosts. Methods your level does not fish (too low, or a better fish takes their place) are greyed out and show the rates at the nearest level they are caught at.
- Catches/h is how many times you catch a fish an hour. With Double Harvest every catch gives two fish.
- XP/h is the experience you get an hour. XP/h Wilderness is the same in the Wilderness and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, where Fishing gives double experience. Anglerfish, halibut, dark crabs and marlin can only be caught there, so they have no normal XP/h.
- SKP/h is what the Fishing or Cooking Tutor pays for your fish in skilling points, minus the bait: dark fishing bait costs 2 and fine fish offcuts 4 skilling points a catch, and the other bait is free. It is the same everywhere.
- PKP/h is that in PK points: right-click your skilling points and choose Claim-PKP to get 1 PK point for every 2 skilling points.

Net, Bait and Lure give a mix of fish, and the rates count it: from level 15 about 7 shrimps for every 3 anchovies, from level 10 about 3 sardines for every 4 herring, and from level 30 as many trout as salmon. Tuna, swordfish and sharks are faster with a dragon, infernal or crystal harpoon; pick yours in the bar.
Equipment
Tools and bait
SKP = skilling points. The Fishing shop is the Fishing Tutor's shop (::fishing), and the Skilling shop belongs to the Skilling Tutor at home. The Skiller starter kit, which you can pick when you create your account, also comes with a fishing rod, fly fishing rod, lobster pot, harpoon, fishing bait, dark fishing bait and feathers.
Harpoons
Main article: Harpoons
The dragon (level 61 Fishing), infernal (75) and crystal (71) harpoons replace the basic Harpoon and make every harpoon catch faster: 20% faster with the dragon or infernal harpoon and 35% faster with the crystal harpoon. With the infernal harpoon, 1 harpoon catch in 4 also gives you the Cooking experience for that fish. Their special attack raises your Fishing level by 3. The Fishing shop sells them for 50,000, 250,000 and 300,000 skilling points.
Angler outfit
Main article: Angler outfit
Each piece of the Angler outfit gives 2% more Fishing experience, and all four give 10%. You need level 34 Fishing to wear it. The Spirit angler pieces give the same bonus without a level requirement, and you can mix both sets. The Fishing Tutor sells both: the hat or headband for 20,000 skilling points, the top for 40,000, the waders for 30,000 and the boots for 10,000.
Experience bonuses
Every catch gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses. Pick them in the bar above any rate table to see your rates with them.
| Bonus | Effect |
|---|---|
| +2% per piece, +10% for the full outfit | |
| +100%: double experience | |
+1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
| |
| Fishing XP (10%) clan perk | The total is multiplied by 1.1 |
| The total is doubled | |
| About 1 catch in 10 gives you a second fish and double experience |
The outfit, Wilderness and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, a marlin gives 10,200 experience. On the Ice Plateau it gives 20,400, with the full Angler outfit 21,420 (10,200 × 2.1), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 26,520 (× 2.6). The clan perk raises that to 29,172 and double experience to 58,344.
Level boosts
Your boosted Fishing level counts for the level requirements, for the harpoons and for the speed of every catch (up to level 99):
- An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Fishing level to 99 for an hour, so you can fish marlin at full speed at any level. A Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour. Both are on the Scrolls page.
- The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.
- The special attack of the dragon, infernal and crystal harpoons boosts your Fishing level by 3.
Other scrolls
- The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk give you two fish on every catch, which doubles the skilling points. The experience stays the same, and your inventory fills twice as fast.
- With the Noted Gatherer scroll, half of your fish go into your inventory as banknotes, so you empty your inventory half as often.

Net/Bait means a spot with a Net and a Bait option. Every Wilderness spot, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine dungeons are dangerous: you lose your items when you die, as described on Items Kept on Death.
Ice Plateau
The Ice Plateau is the icy area at level 54–56 Wilderness, north of the 44 Portals (::44), where the demonic gorillas live. It has 3 Halibut shoals and 4 Marlin shoals, which you fish with a fishing rod and fine fish offcuts from the Fishing shop. Halibut and marlin can only be cooked on the Ice Plateau, which has two fires, and a Piles NPC there turns your items into banknotes. Bring enough offcuts: each catch uses one.

Training by level
The numbers of catches below use the experience given in each section, without the Angler outfit or other bonuses.
Levels 1–20: shrimps, sardines and herring
Start by netting
shrimps (70 experience each) at home or in the Skilling Zone. From level 5 the Bait option is faster:
sardines give 140 experience and, from level 10,
herring give 210. Fishing bait is free in the Fishing and Skilling shops.
Levels 20–40: trout and salmon
From level 20, use the Lure option with a fly fishing rod and feathers.
Trout give 350 experience and, from level 30, you also catch
salmon (490). Feathers are free in the Fishing shop.
Levels 40–61: lobsters or swordfish
Lobsters (540 experience, Cage option) are the best fish from level 40. From level 50,
swordfish (600, Harpoon option) are just as good: they take a little longer but give a little more. Getting from 40 to 61 takes about 490 lobsters, or about 245 at the Bandit Camp in the Wilderness (level 23–24), whose Cage/Harpoon spot gives double experience.
Levels 61–76: swordfish with a better harpoon
A dragon harpoon (level 61) makes swordfish 20% faster, and a crystal harpoon (level 71) 35% faster, which makes swordfish the best fish until level 76. From 61 to 76 you need about 1,720 swordfish, or about 860 in the Wilderness. Monkfish (level 62, 1,200 experience) are a good choice if you do not have a better harpoon yet.
Levels 76–83: sharks
From level 76 the Harpoon option only gives
sharks (880 experience, 250 skilling points each). With a crystal harpoon a shark takes 11 ticks at level 99. Monkfish give a little less experience for the time but no harpoon is needed. From level 82 you can also catch anglerfish in the Wilderness, but sharks with a crystal harpoon give about as much experience for your time.
Levels 83–91: halibut
Halibut give 12,480 experience each on the Ice Plateau: more than five times as much as a monkfish caught in the Wilderness, for less than three times the time. From 83 to 91 you need about 260 halibut.
If you would rather stay out of the deep Wilderness, catch
dark crabs from level 85 (7,800 experience) in the Donator Dungeon, at Easts or in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, or sharks with a crystal harpoon in a double-experience area.
Levels 91–99: marlin
Marlin are the best fish in the game: 20,400 experience each on the Ice Plateau. From 91 to 99 you need about 350 marlin.

At level 99 each of the four Wilderness fish takes 45 ticks (27 seconds) per catch, so the fish that gives the most experience per catch also gives the most for your time: marlin give about 1.6 times as much experience as halibut and 2.6 times as much as dark crabs. Sharks with a crystal harpoon in the Wilderness give about 709,000 experience an hour, close to dark crabs and anglerfish, but need many more clicks.

Marlin are the best money as well as the best experience: one marlin is worth as much as 16 sharks. If you cannot fish on the Ice Plateau, anglerfish (from level 82) and dark crabs (from level 85) are worth the most. Cooking your fish earns more skilling points than selling it raw; see Selling and using your fish.

AFK Fishing
Main article: AFK Skilling
In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Fishing at the AFK fishing spots without any tools or bait once you have level 50 Fishing. You do not get fish, and the experience is lower than active fishing, but your character keeps fishing while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Angler outfit, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators have AFK fishing spots in their own zone.
