Cooking training

Cooking is the skill of cooking raw fish on a fire or a range so that you can eat it. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience every fish gives, at which level each fish stops burning and how cooking earns skilling points. Every fish gives double experience in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. Anglerfish and dark crabs can only be cooked in the Resource Area, at Easts and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and halibut and marlin only on the Ice Plateau.
Quick guide
Every fish takes the same time to cook, so the fish with the most experience you can cook is always the best. You can catch the fish yourself with Fishing or buy them from the Cooking Tutor; see Skilling points.
How Cooking works
- Cooking: use a raw fish on a fire or a range, or click the Cooking range in the Skilling Zone, and choose how many to cook. Your character cooks one fish every 4 ticks (2.4 seconds) until you run out.
- Burning: every fish has a level at which you stop burning it. Below that level the chance to burn a fish is about 25% × (stop-burn level − your Cooking level) ÷ stop-burn level: at level 1 you burn about a quarter of your shrimps, and the chance drops evenly to zero at the stop-burn level. Your boosted level counts, so a level boost also stops you burning. Burnt fish give no experience, but you still get the skilling points for them.
- Where you can cook: only at home, in the Skilling Zone, in the donator zones and in the Wilderness, on the fires and ranges listed in Where to cook. A fire you light yourself with Firemaking works too.
- Big fish: anglerfish and dark crabs can only be cooked in the Resource Area, at Easts and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and halibut and marlin only on the Ice Plateau.
- Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to cook in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Cooking in the Wilderness.
Rates per hour
The rate table shows what cooking every fish gives per hour, so you can compare them:
- The hourly amounts are what an efficient player gets in real play. Every fish takes 4 ticks, so an inventory of 27 raw fish takes about 65 seconds to cook. Quick players need about 10 seconds to get the next inventory and lose a little more time to short breaks, so they cook about 1,200 fish an hour. You get less if you restock slower or take longer breaks.
- Boosts: the bar above each table has your Cooking level and the boosts you have: a Double XP or Double Harvest scroll (or the Well of Goodwill perk), the Cooking gauntlets, the Cooking XP clan perk, the max cape and your vote streak. Every table on the page then shows your rates, and your browser remembers what you picked. With nothing picked the tables show level 99 with no boosts. Fish your level cannot cook yet are greyed out and show the rates at the level you can cook them.
- Fish/h is how many fish you cook an hour, burnt ones included.
- XP/h is the experience you get an hour. Burnt fish give no experience, so below a fish's stop-burn level you get a little less. XP/h Wilderness is the same in the Wilderness and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, where Cooking gives double experience. Halibut, anglerfish, dark crabs and marlin can only be cooked there, so they have no normal XP/h.
- SKP/h is the extra skilling points you earn an hour. Cooking a fish also pays you its raw value, the price the tutors sell it for, so fish you buy cost you nothing and fish you caught are worth the same raw. Burnt fish pay too, and you keep the cooked fish. SKP/h Wilderness is the same in the Wilderness, where the extra points are doubled; the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons pay the normal amount. Halibut and marlin can only be cooked on the Ice Plateau, so they have no normal SKP/h.
- PKP/h is that in PK points: right-click your skilling points and choose Claim-PKP to get 1 PK point for every 2 skilling points.
- If you cook your fish as you catch them, you cook only as many as you catch; see Fishing training.
Fish
Halibut, anglerfish, dark crabs and marlin can only be cooked where Cooking gives double experience, so their experience already includes that bonus. The experience is before the bonuses in Experience bonuses. Fish with a stop-burn level of 99 can still burn, very rarely, until you reach level 99. In the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons you get the Wilderness experience but the normal skilling points, which is why anglerfish and dark crabs give 2,166 there.

Every fish takes the same time to cook, so the best fish is the one with the most experience you can cook. Burning only costs you experience: burnt fish still pay their skilling points.
Equipment
Cooking gauntlets
Main article: Cooking gauntlets
The Cooking gauntlets give 10% more Cooking experience while you wear them. The Cooking Tutor sells them for 100,000 skilling points. They have no level requirement and cannot be traded. On Roat Pkz they only add experience: they do not change how often you burn your food. See also other experience items.
Infernal harpoon
While you fish with an infernal harpoon, 1 harpoon catch in 4 (tuna, swordfish and sharks) also gives you the Cooking experience for that fish. The fish you catch stays raw.
Experience bonuses
Every fish gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses. Pick them in the bar above any rate table to see your rates with them.
| Bonus | Effect |
|---|---|
| +10% | |
| +100%: double experience | |
+1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
| |
| Cooking XP (10%) clan perk | The total is multiplied by 1.1 |
| The total is doubled | |
| About 1 fish in 10 gives double experience and double the extra skilling points |
The gauntlets, Wilderness and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, a marlin gives 2,700 experience before the double-experience bonus. Cooked on the Ice Plateau it gives 5,400, with the Cooking gauntlets 5,670 (2,700 × 2.1), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 7,020 (× 2.6). The clan perk raises that to 7,722 and double experience to 15,444.
Level boosts
Your boosted Cooking level counts for the level requirements and for burning:
- An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Cooking level to 99 for an hour, so you can cook every fish without burning any. A Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour. Both are on the Scrolls page.
- The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.
Other scrolls
- The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk double the extra skilling points for every fish you cook.

Skilling points
Every fish you cook gives you skilling points: the value of the raw fish plus extra points, and the extra points are doubled in the Wilderness. You get them even when you burn the fish, and you keep the cooked fish.
- Buying fish: the Cooking Tutor and the Fishing Tutor sell every raw fish on this page for the same price they pay for it, from 15 skilling points for raw shrimps to 4,000 for a raw marlin. Cooking a fish pays that price back plus the extra points, so cooking bought fish costs nothing and earns the extra points. Fish you buy with the Buy-X option come as banknotes; a Piles NPC turns them back into fish in most Wilderness cooking spots.
- Selling fish: the tutors also buy raw fish at the same prices, but cooking them first is worth more. See Fishing training.
- Cooked fish: you keep every fish you cook. Shark, anglerfish, dark crab, halibut and marlin are good food for combat; see Food. A cooked marlin is worth 5 PK points, a halibut 3 and an anglerfish 2, and you can trade them.
- You can turn skilling points into PK points at 2 skilling points for 1 PK point.
- The SKP/h columns in the rate table count these extra points.
| Fish | Raw fish value (SKP) |
Extra SKP | Extra SKP (Wilderness) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4,000 | – | 664 | |
| 3,000 | – | 600 | |

| 250 | 40 | 80 | |
| 150 | 32 | 64 | |
| 70 | 30 | 60 | |
| 50 | 26 | 52 |
Marlin earn the most: 664 extra skilling points each on the Ice Plateau, as well as the most experience. Anglerfish and dark crabs give 166 extra in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, where the experience is doubled but the skilling points are not.
Training by level
The numbers of fish below use the experience in the Wilderness, without the Cooking gauntlets or other bonuses. In a safe area you need twice as many.
Levels 1–30: sardines to salmon
Cook
sardines (160 experience) from level 1,
herring (200) from level 5,
trout (280) from level 15 and
salmon (360) from level 25. These levels go quickly: about 25 fish at the Bandit Camp, or 50 at home or in the Skilling Zone.
Levels 30–62: tuna, lobsters and swordfish
Cook
tuna (400) from level 30,
lobsters (480) from 40 and
swordfish (560) from 45. From 30 to 62 you need about 300 fish in the Wilderness, or about 600 in a safe area. You still burn quite a few of these fish at first: swordfish stop burning at level 86.
Levels 62–80: monkfish
Monkfish give 600 experience, 1,200 in the Wilderness, and stop burning at level 90. From 62 to 80 you need about 1,380 monkfish at the Bandit Camp, or about 2,750 in the Skilling Zone.
Levels 80–83: sharks
Sharks give 840 experience, 1,680 in the Wilderness. You need about 410 sharks in the Wilderness to reach level 83.
Levels 83–91: halibut
Halibut give 4,200 experience each on the Ice Plateau, much more than anything else at these levels. From 83 to 91 you need about 770 halibut. If you cannot cook on the Ice Plateau, cook
anglerfish from level 84 (2,400 experience) at Easts (level 37), in the Resource Area or in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons: about 1,230 anglerfish from 84 to 91.
Levels 91–99: marlin
Marlin are the best fish to cook: 5,400 experience and 4,664 skilling points each on the Ice Plateau. From 91 to 99 you need about 1,320 marlin.

Marlin and halibut also earn the most skilling points: about 800,000 and 720,000 extra an hour on the Ice Plateau. Anglerfish and dark crabs give about 400,000 an hour in the Resource Area and at Easts, and half that in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. You need enough skilling points to buy your first inventory of raw fish; every fish pays its price back when you cook it.
AFK Cooking
Main article: AFK Skilling
In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Cooking at the AFK range without any fish once you have level 50 Cooking. You do not cook any food or earn skilling points, and the experience is lower than active cooking, but your character keeps cooking while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Cooking gauntlets, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have an AFK range in their own zone.
Other rewards
- Pet: while you cook you can receive the Pet Culinaromancer skilling pet. It comes more often in the Wilderness and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.
- Clue scrolls and Skilling Crates: every fish you cook without burning it can also give you a clue scroll or a
Skilling Crate. - Achievements give skilling points for your Cooking level and experience and for the number of fish and of anglerfish and dark crabs you cook. Reaching level 99 also gives a
Silver XP Lamp. - Skillcapes: at level 99 you can wear the
Cooking cape, which the Skilling Master in the Skilling Zone gives out for free. With 200 million Cooking experience you can buy the Cooking mastery cape from him for 200,000 PK points.
