Woodcutting training

Woodcutting is the skill of cutting logs from trees with an axe. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience every tree gives and what to do with your logs: sell them for skilling points, burn them with Firemaking or fletch them with Fletching. Every log gives double experience in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. Magic trees can only be cut there and in the Donator Dungeon, and redwoods only grow in the Divine Skilling Zone.

Quick guide

Woodcutting Levels Tree Where
1–15 Normal trees Home, Skilling Zone, Donator Zone
15–45 Oak trees; willows (level 30) give more per log but less for your time Home, Skilling Zone
45–99 Maple trees, the most experience for your time from level 45 to 99 Skilling Zone, or south of East Dragons and the Royal and Divine dungeons for double experience
75–99 Magic trees, for money: each log is worth 1,000 skilling points Resource Area, Donator Dungeon, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons
90–99 Redwood trees, which never fall Divine Skilling Zone (Divine Donators only)

On Roat Pkz the fastest experience comes from the quick trees, not the high-level ones: maples beat yews and magic trees at every level. See Most experience.

How Woodcutting works

  • Axe: you need an axe in your inventory or weapon slot. If you carry several, the best one you have the Woodcutting level for is used. You do not need an Attack level to cut with it.
  • Speed: each log takes a random time around an average that depends on the tree, your Woodcutting level and your axe. Your axe has the bigger effect, so a better axe is the biggest upgrade. Levels above 99 do not make you any faster. Times on this page are in game ticks of 0.6 seconds.
  • Falling trees: a normal tree falls after one log. Every other tree has a 1 in 17 chance to fall after each log, so it gives 17 logs on average. A fallen tree grows back after the time in the table below, and everyone cutting it stops. Redwoods never fall.
  • Where you can cut: only at home, in the Skilling Zone, in the donator zones and in the Wilderness. Magic trees can only be cut in the Wilderness, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and redwoods only in the Divine Skilling Zone.
  • Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to cut trees in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Woodcutting in the Wilderness.

Rates per hour

The rate tables show what every tree gives per hour, so you can compare them:

  • The hourly amounts are what an efficient player gets in real play. Every log takes the time its tree, your Woodcutting level and your axe allow. When your tree falls you lose about as long as it takes to grow back or to get to another tree, and selling an inventory to the Woodsman tutor takes about 10 seconds. On top of that, quick players lose a little time to clicking and short breaks. You get less if you sell slower, share your trees with other players or take breaks.
  • Boosts: the bar above each table has your Woodcutting level, your axe and the boosts you have: a Double XP, Double Harvest or Noted Gatherer scroll (or the Well of Goodwill perk), the Lumberjack outfit, the Woodcutting XP clan perk, the max cape and your vote streak. Every table on the page then shows your rates, and your browser remembers what you picked. With nothing picked the tables show level 99 with a dragon axe and no boosts. The bar uses the best axe up to the one you pick that your level allows. Trees your level cannot cut yet are greyed out and show the rates at the level you need for them.
  • Logs/h is how many logs you get an hour. With Double Harvest you get two logs every time, and the max cape gives a second log about 1 time in 10.
  • XP/h is the experience you get an hour. XP/h Wilderness is the same in the Wilderness and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, where Woodcutting gives double experience. Magic trees and redwoods only grow there, so they have no normal XP/h.
  • SKP/h is what the Woodsman, Fletching or Firemaking Tutor pays for your logs in skilling points. It is the same everywhere.
  • PKP/h is that in PK points: right-click your skilling points and choose Claim-PKP to get 1 PK point for every 2 skilling points.

The times are for level 99 with a dragon axe. Magic trees and redwoods can only be cut where Woodcutting gives double experience, so their experience already includes that bonus. The experience is before the bonuses below. "Sells for" is what the Woodsman tutor pays for one log; see Selling and using your logs.

A better axe makes every tree faster; pick yours in the bar. The crystal axe and the Aquatic adze take up to 10% less time per log than a dragon axe on maples and better trees, and the adze also notes 9 logs in 10, so you sell less often. With the infernal axe you also get Firemaking experience: at level 99 about 12,000 an hour on yews and 34,000 on magic trees.

Equipment

Axes

Main article: Axes

The Woodsman tutor (::woodcutting) sells every standard axe for skilling points, from a free bronze axe to the crystal axe (level 71, 300,000 skilling points), the fastest one. The Skilling Tutor at home also gives a free bronze axe. A better axe makes a big difference: a magic log takes 110 ticks on average with a bronze axe at level 99, 39 with a rune axe, 30 with a dragon axe and 27 with a crystal axe. The dragon (level 61), infernal (61) and crystal axes have a special attack that raises your Woodcutting level by 3.

The infernal axe cuts as fast as a dragon axe. With it, 1 log in 4 also gives you half the Firemaking experience for burning that log, for example 400 for a magic log before bonuses. You keep the log, and you do not need a Firemaking level.

Lumberjack outfit

Main article: Lumberjack outfit

Each piece of the Lumberjack outfit gives 2% more Woodcutting experience, and all four give 10%. There is no level requirement. The Woodsman tutor sells the hat for 20,000 skilling points, the top for 40,000, the legs for 30,000 and the boots for 10,000.

Experience bonuses

Every log gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses. Pick them in the bar above any rate table to see your rates with them.

Bonus Effect
Lumberjack outfit +2% per piece, +10% for the full outfit
Wilderness, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons +100%: double experience
Vote streak +1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
Woodcutting XP (10%) clan perk The total is multiplied by 1.1
Double XP scroll or the Well of Goodwill's Double XP perk The total is doubled
Max cape About 1 log in 10 gives you a second log and double experience

The outfit, Wilderness and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, a magic log gives 2,200 experience before the Wilderness bonus. Cut in the Wilderness it gives 4,400, with the full Lumberjack outfit 4,620 (2,200 × 2.1), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 5,720 (× 2.6). The clan perk raises that to 6,292 and double experience to 12,584.

Level boosts

Your boosted Woodcutting level counts for the level requirements, for your axe and for the speed of every log (up to level 99):

  • An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Woodcutting level to 99 for an hour, and a Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour; see Scrolls.
  • The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.
  • The special attack of the dragon, infernal and crystal axes boosts your Woodcutting level by 3.

Other scrolls

  • The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk give you two logs every time, which doubles the skilling points. The experience stays the same, and your inventory fills twice as fast.
  • With the Noted Gatherer scroll, half of your logs go into your inventory as banknotes, so you sell half as often.

The numbers are how many trees of each kind there are. The Donator Dungeon is open to every donator rank, but its magic trees are in the Super, Extreme and Legendary Donator sections. The Royal skilling dungeon is for Royal Donators and the Divine Skilling Zone for Divine Donators. Every Wilderness spot, the Donator Dungeon and the Royal and Divine dungeons are dangerous: other players can attack you, and you lose your items when you die (see Items Kept on Death).

Training by level

The numbers of logs below use the experience given in each section, without the Lumberjack outfit or other bonuses.

Levels 1–15: normal trees

Cut normal trees (150 experience per log) at home, in the Skilling Zone or in the Donator Zone. A normal tree falls after every log, so move from tree to tree. You need about 17 logs to reach level 15.

Levels 15–45: oak trees

From level 15, cut oak trees (220 experience). They give more experience for your time than willows: an oak log takes 3 ticks at level 99, a willow log 8. Willows (level 30, 500 experience) give more experience per log, so they need fewer clicks, but less for your time. From 15 to 45 you need about 270 oak logs. Once your combat level is 100, the oak trees just past the Wilderness ditch give double experience.

Levels 45–99: maple trees

Maples (1,320 experience) give the most experience for your time at every level from 45, more than yews and magic trees. The Skilling Zone has three maples. Where Woodcutting gives double experience, a maple log is worth 2,640: south of East Dragons (::east, level 15–17 Wilderness) there are three maples, and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons have two and three. From 45 to 99 you need about 9,830 maple logs, or about 4,910 with double experience. With the best axe your level allows, up to a dragon axe, that takes about 34 hours, or about 17 where Woodcutting gives double experience.

Levels 75–99: magic trees for money

Magic logs give 4,400 experience (magic trees can only be cut where Woodcutting gives double experience) and are worth 1,000 skilling points each, ten times as much as a maple log. Cut them when you want skilling points as well as experience. From 75 to 99 you need about 2,690 magic logs, about 18 hours with a dragon axe. The Resource Area has four magic trees, the Donator Dungeon five, the Royal skilling dungeon four and the Divine Skilling Zone three.

Levels 90–99: redwood trees

Divine Donators can cut the 12 redwood trees in the Divine Skilling Zone: 5,280 experience and 2,000 skilling points per log, and redwoods never fall. You can start at level 65, because the zone boosts your Woodcutting level by 25.

Maples give the most experience for your time at every level from 45: about 15% more than magic trees at level 99, and magic trees give more than yews. Redwoods give the least of the high-level trees, but they never fall, so they need the fewest clicks.

Redwoods earn the most skilling points for your time, about a quarter more than magic logs. Magic logs are the best money for everyone without the Divine Donator rank: a magic log is worth more than three yew logs and takes about the same time to cut. Burning your logs earns even more; see Selling and using your logs.

AFK Woodcutting

Main article: AFK Skilling

In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Woodcutting at the AFK tree without an axe once you have level 50 Woodcutting. You do not get any logs, and the experience is lower than active woodcutting, but your character keeps cutting while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Lumberjack outfit, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have an AFK tree in their own zone.

Other rewards

  • Pet: while you cut trees you can receive a Beaver skilling pet, which comes in a different look for each kind of tree. It comes more often in the Wilderness and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.
  • Clue scrolls and Skilling Crates: you can also receive clue scrolls and Skilling Crates while cutting trees.
  • Achievements give skilling points for your Woodcutting level and experience and for the number of logs and magic logs you cut.
  • Daily tasks can ask you to cut logs in the Wilderness; logs from the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons count too.
  • Skillcapes: at level 99 you can wear the Woodcutting cape, which the Skilling Master in the Skilling Zone gives out for free. With 200 million Woodcutting experience you can buy the Woodcutting mastery cape from him for 200,000 PK points.
