| Poison and venom | |
|---|---|
| Hits every | 34 ticks (20.4 seconds) |
| Poison | Starts at 2 to 20 damage, depending on the source, and drops by 1 after every 4 hits |
| Venom | Starts at 6 damage and rises by 2 with every hit, up to 20 |
| Protection | A charged Serpentine helm, or a cure that protects you for a while |
Poison and venom damage you over time. Poison hits you with green
hitsplats that get weaker until the poison wears off. Venom is the stronger kind: its dark green
hitsplats get bigger with every hit, and it never wears off by itself.
Both hit once every 34 game ticks (20.4 seconds). Protection prayers don't lower them, and they can kill you. Your Hitpoints orb shows when you are poisoned or venomed, and logging out doesn't remove either of them.
Poison
- Poison hits 4 times at its starting damage, then drops by 1 and hits 4 times again, and so on. When it reaches 0 it ends: You are no longer poisoned.
- A new poison only takes over if it is stronger than the one you already have.
- You can't be poisoned while you are venomed.
| Starting damage | Hits | Total damage | Lasts about |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 8 | 12 | 2 minutes 43 seconds |
| 3 | 12 | 24 | 4 minutes 5 seconds |
| 4 | 16 | 40 | 5 minutes 26 seconds |
| 5 | 20 | 60 | 6 minutes 48 seconds |
| 6 | 24 | 84 | 8 minutes 10 seconds |
| 20 | 80 | 840 | 27 minutes 12 seconds |
What poisons you
| Source | Starting damage | When it poisons | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poisoned ammunition and thrown weapons: (p), (p+) and (p++) arrows, bolts, darts, knives and javelins | 2 (p) 3 (p+) 4 (p++) |
20% of the hits that deal damage | |
| Poisoned melee weapons, such as the Dragon dagger(p++) | 4 (p) 5 (p+ and p++) |
20% of the hits that deal damage | |
| Abyssal tentacle | 4 | 20% of the hits that deal damage | |
| Emerald dragon bolts (e) | 5 | When the bolt's effect triggers (see Enchanted dragon bolts) | |
| Poisonous monsters, such as Poison spiders and Scorpia's offspring | 6 | 1 in 9 of their hits that deal damage | |
| King Black Dragon and King Divine Dragon | 6 | 1 in 9 of their hits that deal damage, and 1 in 11 green dragonfire breaths that deal damage | |
| Scorpia | 20 | 1 in 6 of her attacks | |
| Great Olm | 6 | Standing on one of its acid pools, which also hit you for 3–6 damage every tick | |
- Poisoned weapons, the Abyssal tentacle and poisonous monsters only poison with hits that deal damage, so a monster's hit that your protection prayer blocks completely can't poison you. Scorpia's poison comes with her attack itself, whether it hits or not.
- A monster's page shows whether it is poisonous.
Venom
Venom replaces any poison you have. It starts at 6 damage, and every venom hit makes the next one 2 higher, up to 20:
| Venom hit | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th and later |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Damage | 6 | 8 | 10 | 12 | 14 | 16 | 18 | 20 |
- After 8 hits (about 2 minutes 43 seconds) venom has dealt 104 damage, and after 15 hits (about 5 minutes) 244.
- Venom never wears off by itself. You have to cure it (see below), or it ends when you die.
- On a monster, venom stops dealing damage once it has dealt 200 damage in total.
What venoms you
| Source | When it venoms | |
|---|---|---|
| Toxic blowpipe (and its Blazing blowpipe version) | 1 in 6 of its hits that deal damage | |
| Toxic staff of the dead | 1 in 6 of its melee hits that deal damage | |
| Noxious halberd | 1 in 6 of its hits that deal damage | |
| A charged Serpentine helm, magma helm or tanzanite helm, worn | 1 in 6 of your melee and ranged hits that deal damage, with any weapon | |
| Zulrah in its green form | Every attack, even when your prayer blocks the hit | |
Protection
- Serpentine helm: while you wear a charged Serpentine helm, magma helm or tanzanite helm, you can't be poisoned or venomed by anything. It doesn't cure a poison or venom you already have.
- Potions: anti-venom potions, the antipoison mix and the sanfew serum protect you for a while after you drink them (see Cures).
- Duel Arena: poison and venom don't affect players in the Duel Arena.
- Monsters: many monsters, including most bosses, are immune to poison, venom or both. Each monster's page shows its immunities.
- Protection prayers don't lower poison or venom damage (see Protection prayers).
Cures
| Cure | Effect | Protection afterwards | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anti-venom+ | Cures venom and poison | Venom: 3 minutes (300 ticks) Poison: 15 minutes (1,500 ticks) | |
| Anti-venom | Cures venom and poison | Venom: 36 to 54 seconds (60–90 ticks) Poison: 12 minutes (1,200 ticks) | |
| Sanfew serum | Cures venom and poison, and restores your stats | Poison: 6 minutes (600 ticks) | |
| Antipoison mix | Cures poison (not venom) and heals 3 Hitpoints | Poison: 90 seconds (150 ticks) | |
| Guthix rest | Turns venom into a 6-damage poison, or lowers your poison damage by 1 (curing a 1-damage poison) | – | |
| Noxious halberd special attack (50% energy) | Cures your poison or venom, and your next melee hit deals at least as much as the poison or venom was doing | – | |
Restoration pools at ::home |
Cure poison and venom, and refill your Hitpoints, Prayer and run energy. Not in PvP areas. | – | |
::hp (Legendary Donator and above) |
The same as the pools. Not in PvP areas, minigames, raids, duels, Barrows or dangerous PvM areas, or while you are under attack. | – | |
The Hitpoints orb, or the Cure Poison key in ::keybinds (Royal Donator and above) |
Cures poison and venom, with the same limits as ::hp. |

- Drinking a cure tells you how long it protects you, for example You are now immune to poison for 15 minutes.
- Anti-venom+, the sanfew serum and the Guthix rest are on the Potions page with their prices. Anti-venom and the antipoison mix can be spawned outside PvP areas (see Commands).
- Dying also removes poison and venom.
PvP and PvM
- Poisoned weapons, venom weapons and the Serpentine helm work the same way against players and monsters, with the same chances.
- Against a player who wears a charged Serpentine helm, magma helm or tanzanite helm, poison and venom can't take hold at all.
- On a monster, venom stops after 200 damage, while on a player it keeps going until it is cured.
- Many monsters are immune to poison or venom; players are only protected in the ways listed above.
- Most monsters only poison you with hits that deal damage, so a protection prayer that blocks their attacks also stops their poison. Scorpia, Zulrah and the Great Olm's acid pools are the exceptions.
