Crafting is the skill of cutting gems with a chisel and spinning flax into bow strings and crossbow strings. This guide shows where and how to train it on Roat Pkz, how much experience every gem and string gives and how Crafting earns skilling points. Cutting gems gives double experience in the Resource Area, next to three Piles NPCs in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, and zenyte can only be cut in the Resource Area and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.

Quick guide

Crafting Levels Method Where
1–10 Cut opals Anywhere outside the Wilderness
10–67 Pick flax and spin it into bow strings Skilling Zone (::crafting)
67–89 Cut onyx A double-experience spot, or anywhere outside the Wilderness
89–99 Cut zenyte Resource Area, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons

Every gem takes the same time to cut, so the best gem you can cut always gives the most experience. If you can defend yourself in the Wilderness, cutting gems at a double-experience spot beats spinning from level 43; see Training by level.

How Crafting works

  • Cutting gems: use a chisel on an uncut gem and choose how many to cut. Your character cuts one gem every 2 ticks (1.2 seconds) until you run out, and a gem never fails. You need a chisel in your inventory; the Crafting Tutor gives them out for free.
  • Where you can cut gems: anywhere outside the Wilderness, for example at a bank. In the Wilderness you can only cut gems in the Resource Area and around three Piles NPCs: at the Bandit Camp, south of East Dragons and at Easts. Those four spots and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons give double experience. Zenyte can only be cut in the Resource Area and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.
  • Flax: pick flax from the flax plants in the Skilling Zone and the Divine Skilling Zone. You pick one flax every 2 ticks, and now and then a plant disappears for a minute before it grows back.
  • Spinning: use the Spin option on a spinning wheel and choose bow strings or crossbow strings. Your character spins one flax every 3 ticks (1.8 seconds). Spinning wheels stand in the Skilling Zone and the Divine Skilling Zone.
  • Skilling points: Crafting gives no skilling points by itself. You earn them by selling what you make to the Crafting Tutor, who pays more for cut gems than he asks for uncut ones; see Skilling points.
  • Wilderness: you need a combat level of at least 100 to train Crafting in the Wilderness, and other players can attack you there. Hardcore PvP accounts can only train Crafting in the Wilderness.

Rates per hour

The rate tables show what every way of training gives per hour, so you can compare them:

  • The hourly amounts are what an efficient player gets in real play. A gem or an amethyst takes 2 ticks to cut, and every inventory takes about 10 seconds more to sell what you made and buy more at the Crafting Tutor. Your chisel and skilling points take two slots, so a trip is 26 gems: about 2,270 gems an hour. Spinning assumes you pick the flax yourself: 2 ticks to pick and 3 to spin each flax, plus about 15 seconds an inventory for walking to the wheel and selling the strings, which is about 1,000 flax an hour. You get less if you restock slower or take breaks.
  • Boosts: the bar above each table has your Crafting level and the boosts you have: a Double XP or Double Harvest scroll (or the Well of Goodwill perk), the Crafting apron, the Crafting XP clan perk, the max cape and your vote streak. Every table on the page then shows your rates, and your browser remembers what you picked. With nothing picked the tables show level 99 and no boosts. Methods your level cannot do are greyed out.
  • Actions/h is how many gems you cut, flax you spin or amethyst you chisel an hour. With the max cape it counts the second gems too.
  • XP/h is the experience you get an hour. XP/h Resource Area is the same in the Resource Area, at the three Piles spots in the Wilderness and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons, where Crafting gives double experience. For spinning it is the Divine Skilling Zone. Zenyte can only be cut where Crafting gives double experience, so it has no normal XP/h.
  • SKP/h is your profit in skilling points: what the Crafting Tutor pays for the cut gems or strings, minus what the uncut gems cost. Flax is free. For amethyst it is what chiselling pays minus the 1,500 skilling points the tutors pay for an amethyst, because no shop buys the tips. A negative number is what the method costs you. It is the same everywhere.
  • PKP/h is that profit in PK points: right-click your skilling points and choose Claim-PKP to get 1 PK point for every 2 skilling points.

"Double experience" is the experience in the Resource Area, at the three Piles spots and in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons. Zenyte can only be cut where Crafting gives double experience, so its experience already includes the bonus. All experience is before the bonuses in Experience bonuses. The prices are those of the Crafting Tutor, who sells every uncut gem and buys every cut gem.

10 Bow string 1 flax 300 600 20
10 Crossbow string 1 flax 300 600 20

Flax cannot be bought from a shop, so you pick it yourself. The Crafting Tutor and the Fletching Tutor both buy bow strings and crossbow strings, and Fletching uses them to string bows and crossbows. The Divine Skilling Zone counts as a double-experience area for spinning too.

Amethyst ammunition

With level 83 Crafting you can use a chisel on amethyst to make ammunition tips. This trains Crafting, not Fletching, and gets the same double experience as cutting gems.

Crafting Level Makes (per amethyst) XP XP
(double experience)
Used for
83 15 amethyst bolt tips 120 240 Amethyst broad bolts
85 15 amethyst arrowtips 130 260 Amethyst arrows
87 5 amethyst javelin heads 140 280 Amethyst javelins
89 8 amethyst dart tips 150 300 Amethyst darts

Each amethyst takes 2 ticks and also gives 60 to 68 skilling points. You mine amethyst in the Divine Skilling Zone (see Mining training), and the Mining and Crafting Tutors buy and sell it for 1,500 skilling points. The tips go into Fletching. Amethyst tips are a way to make your own amethyst ammunition rather than a training method: cutting gems gives more experience for each action.

Every gem takes the same time to cut, so the best gem you can cut gives the most experience. The max cape cuts a second gem on about 1 cut in 10, so you cut about 7% more gems an hour; pick it in the bar. Spinning gives as much experience per flax as an onyx, but picking and spinning a flax takes 5 ticks. Amethyst tips are a way to make your own amethyst ammunition rather than a training method: each amethyst is worth 1,500 skilling points and chiselling it pays 60 to 68.

Equipment

Chisel

You need a chisel in your inventory to cut gems and amethyst. The Crafting Tutor gives them out for free.

Crafting apron

Main article: Other experience items

The Crafting apron (10%) was introduced to Roat Pkz on 26 August 2024. It gives 10% more Crafting experience while you wear it in your body slot, for cutting gems, spinning flax and amethyst tips. The Crafting Tutor sells it for 100,000 skilling points. It has no level requirement and cannot be traded.

Experience bonuses

Every gem and string gives the experience in the tables above, raised by these bonuses. Pick them in the bar above any rate table to see your rates with them.

Bonus Effect
Crafting apron (10%) +10%
Resource Area, the three Piles spots in the Wilderness, Royal and Divine skilling dungeons +100%: double experience
Vote streak +1% for every day in a row you have voted, up to +50% (::votestreak shows yours)
Crafting XP (10%) clan perk The total is multiplied by 1.1
Double XP scroll or the Well of Goodwill's Double XP perk The total is doubled
Max cape When cutting gems: about 1 gem in 10 cuts a second gem and gives double experience

The apron, Wilderness and vote streak bonuses are added together first, and the clan perk and double experience multiply the result. For example, an onyx gives 200 experience. In the Resource Area it gives 400, with the Crafting apron 420 (200 × 2.1), and with a 50-day vote streak as well 520 (× 2.6). The clan perk raises that to 572 and double experience to 1,144.

Level boosts

Your boosted Crafting level counts for the level requirements:

  • An Indomitable Skiller scroll sets your Crafting level to 99 for an hour, so you can cut zenyte at any level. A Skill Boost scroll raises it by 25 levels for an hour. Both are on the Scrolls page.
  • The Royal skilling dungeon boosts your skills by 15 levels and the Divine Skilling Zone by 25 levels, up to 99, while you are inside.

Other scrolls

  • The Double Harvest scroll and the Well of Goodwill's Double Harvest perk pay the profit of every gem you cut once more in skilling points, straight into your inventory: 200 skilling points for every zenyte, for example. Every flax you spin gives 10 extra skilling points.

Piles is an NPC who turns banknotes back into items and items into banknotes. Every Wilderness spot and the Royal and Divine dungeons are dangerous: you lose your items when you die, as described on Items Kept on Death.

Skilling points

The Crafting Tutor sells every uncut gem and buys every cut gem for more, so every gem you cut earns its profit in skilling points when you sell it back. He stands in the Skilling Zone, the Resource Area and the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.

  • Zenyte is by far the best: an uncut zenyte costs 50 skilling points and the cut zenyte sells for 250. Buy them in the Resource Area and cut them there.
  • Banknotes: gems you buy with the Buy-X option come as banknotes, and the Piles NPCs at the Wilderness spots and in the Royal and Divine dungeons turn them back into gems. The tutors also buy noted gems.
  • You can turn skilling points into PK points at 2 skilling points for 1 PK point.
  • The SKP/h column in the rate table counts this profit for an hour of cutting; the Most skilling points table ranks the methods.
  • You can also keep cut gems for Fletching, which turns them into bolt tips with a chisel.

Training by level

The numbers of gems and flax below use the experience in the tables above, without the Crafting apron or other bonuses.

Cutting an uncut dragonstone with a chisel, in the crafting cape, at the Edgeville home area
Cutting an uncut dragonstone with a chisel, in the crafting cape, at the Edgeville home area

Levels 1–10: opals

Cut opals (50 experience each) anywhere outside the Wilderness. You need about 24 opals to reach level 10, or 12 at a double-experience spot.

Levels 10–67: bow strings

From level 10, pick flax in the Skilling Zone's flax field and spin it into bow strings at the spinning wheel next to it (::crafting). Every flax gives 300 experience, as much as an onyx, and every bow string sells for 20 skilling points. From 10 to 67 you need about 1,820 flax. Divine Donators get 600 experience per flax in the Divine Skilling Zone, which has its own flax plants and spinning wheel.

If you train in the Wilderness, gems at a double-experience spot give more experience for your time from level 43: diamonds (250 experience there) and from level 55 dragonstones (300). From 43 to 67 that takes about 470 diamonds and 1,270 dragonstones, and you never need to pick flax.

Levels 67–89: onyx

Onyx give 200 experience, 400 at a double-experience spot, and 36 skilling points of profit each. From 67 to 89 you need about 21,470 onyx in a safe area, or about 10,740 in the Resource Area, at a Piles spot or in the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.

Levels 89–99: zenyte

Zenyte give 500 experience each and 200 skilling points of profit, the most of any gem. From 89 to 99 you need about 16,390 zenyte, cut in the Resource Area or the Royal and Divine skilling dungeons.

AFK Crafting

Main article: AFK Skilling

In the AFK Skilling zone (::afkskilling) you can train Crafting at the AFK spinning wheel without any flax once you have level 50 Crafting. You do not make any strings or skilling points, and the experience is lower than active Crafting, but your character keeps spinning while you are away and you earn AFK Tokens for the AFK Skilling Shop. The Crafting apron, vote streak, clan perk and double experience count there too. Divine Donators also have an AFK spinning wheel in their own zone.
