Multi-combat areas
A multi-combat area (often just called multi) is a place where any number of players and monsters can attack the same target at once. Everywhere else is single-way combat (singles): while one player or monster is fighting you, nobody else can attack you, and you can't attack anyone else. A third kind, singles-plus, is used in the donator PvP areas.
Multi-combat areas are where clans fight in the Wilderness, where barrage spells and chinchompas hit several players at once, and where several of the Wilderness bosses live. While you stand in one, the multi-combat icon
shows on your screen; in a singles-plus area you see the singles-plus icon
instead. In the teleport interface, teleports that lead into a multi-combat area have an extra icon next to their name.
The three kinds of combat
Single-way combat
After a player hits you, you count as being in combat with them for a short time, and nobody else can attack you until it runs out. Players often call this the PJ timer:
| Where | How long a player's hit keeps you in combat |
|---|---|
| Wilderness | 10 ticks (6 seconds) |
| Edge PvP and the weekly PvP zone (see PvP) | 20 ticks (12 seconds) |
| Risk Zone | 18 ticks (10.8 seconds) |
| Singles-plus areas | 18 ticks (10.8 seconds) |
- A monster's hit also keeps you in combat: for 10 ticks (6 seconds) in the Wilderness, or 18 ticks in singles-plus areas. While a monster is attacking you in a single-way area, other players can't attack you, unless it is one of the bosses that ignore single-way combat.
- If you try anyway, the game says You are already in combat., That player is already in combat. or That monster is already in combat.
- A player who stands in a multi-combat area can always be attacked, even by someone standing in a single-way area. If you stand in multi but your target stands in a single-way area, the single-way rules still protect them.
- Special attacks: in single-way combat in the Wilderness and the other PvP areas where you lose items, once someone uses a special attack on a player, nobody else can use a special attack on that player for 20 ticks (12 seconds). See Special attacks.
Multi-combat
- Anyone you could attack anyway can be attacked: the Wilderness level still decides whose combat level is close enough to yours.
- Barrage spells and chinchompas hit your target and every other player in the 3×3 square around it, as long as your target stands in a multi-combat area. Each extra player must also stand in multi, be someone you could attack yourself and be in your line of sight, and each one is protected by their own protection prayer. They work on groups of monsters too; see Ancient Magicks and Black chinchompa.
- The Dinh's bulwark special attack also hits other targets in multi-combat areas.
- Risk defence and the PvP blacklist don't stop a fight when both players stand in a multi-combat area.
- Kills in the multi-combat parts of the Wilderness count for the Multi Kills ranking on the Hiscores.
Singles-plus
Singles-plus
is used in these PvP areas:
- the Donator Dungeon of the Donator Zone (Wilderness levels 31–50);
- the top floor of the castle and the Royal Skilling Dungeon in the Royal Donator Zone;
- the Divine Monster Dungeon and the Divine Skilling Zone in the Divine Donator Zone.
It works like this:
- Fights between players are one against one. You count as being in a fight with a player for about 11 seconds after either of you last attacked the other, and during that time no third player can join in and you can't attack anyone else.
- Fighting a monster doesn't protect you from players: another player can attack you while you are fighting a monster.
- A monster can't attack you while you are fighting another player.
- Each monster can only be fought by one player at a time, except in the PvP areas of the Royal Donator Zone and the lower part of the Divine Monster Dungeon, where any number of players can attack the same monster.
Bosses that ignore single-way combat
These bosses can be attacked by any number of players at once, even in single-way areas. Their attacks also don't count as being in combat, so in a single-way area another player can still attack you while one of these bosses is hitting you.
| Boss | Where | |
|---|---|---|
| Callisto | Both Wilderness lairs (single-way and multi), and the Royal Donator Zone | |
| Venenatis | Both Wilderness lairs (single-way and multi), and the Royal Donator Zone | |
| Vet'ion | Both Wilderness lairs (single-way and multi), and the Royal Donator Zone | |
| Nex | Level 46 (multi) and level 51 (single-way) Wilderness, and the Royal Donator Zone | |
| TzTok-Jad | Spawns in the Wilderness every hour | |
| Skotizo | Spawns in the Wilderness every hour | |

The holiday bosses that spawn in the Wilderness during the holiday events work the same way.

Multi-combat areas outside the Wilderness
These places are not PvP areas, but they are multi-combat for fights against monsters:
- the lair of the King Black Dragon;
- the lair of the Corporeal Beast;
- the cave of the Kraken;
- the shrine of Zulrah;
- the Chambers of Xeric and the Theatre of Blood;
- the arena where you fight The Mimic.
Places where you can fight other players outside the Wilderness:
- the Castle Wars arena (Castle Wars) is multi-combat;
- the Fun PK zone (
::funpk), where you keep your items, is multi-combat in its northern part; - the Tier 4 clan island has both a single-way and a multi-combat Fun PK area;
- the PvP areas of the Royal Donator Zone and the Divine Donator Zone are singles-plus;
- Edge PvP, the weekly PvP zone and the Risk Zone are single-way (see PvP).
Clan Warfare always takes place in a multi-combat part of the Wilderness.
